Save Your Time & Money With Easy Computer Hardware Troubleshooting Tips

March 28th, 2010

What happens when you experience problems with your computer hardware? Do you panic and battle to make sense of what is happening, or can you clearly relate to your computer technician what went wrong and where you believe the problem could be? In this article we will teach you some basic steps for hardware troubleshooting in order to save you from unnecessary expenses and to help you feel more confident when working with your computer.

To avoid problems if your hardware does crash, it is best to have a backup routine in place. Then, if you have backed up all your files, you do not need to fear losing any important documents and by following a few simple steps you should soon have your computer in working order.

Start by checking whether there are any minor problems which could be causing your computer not to work, such as a loose cable, lack of power, etc. If everything appears to be plugged in properly then check that your electric outlet is working properly by plugging a lamp into it. If you are still not sure where the problem lies you are going to need to do some more basic hardware troubleshooting.

Then you can switch on your computer and watch what happens. A number of things should take place:

1. Firstly, when you start your computer the power-supply fan should activate

2. The light on your keyboard should flash

3. A BIOS message should come up on your computer screen

4. A memory test should flicker on the screen

5. The floppy disk light should flicker briefly

6. The hard drive light should flicker

7. The system will make a beeping sound once it has completed the initialization process

8. The floppy disk drive light will flash again before it switches to the hard drive

9. If you are running Windows you should now see the starting Windows message

Determine which of these steps take place and which do not you are able to see where the problem lies and do your own basic hardware troubleshooting. For example, if the light on your keyboard doesn’t flash then there is probably a problem between your keyboard and the computer. You wouldn’t replace a disk drive if there is a problem with the memory test, etc.

By observing what happens, you are able to do basic hardware troubleshooting and even if you are unable to fix it yourself, you will be more knowledgeable when approaching a PC technician to tell them what is wrong with your computer. You can tell them why you believe there is a problem and then they can give you advice in line with that without wasting your time and money trying to figure it out.

If you are still encountering problems, try starting your computer in safe mode. If you can start your computer in safe mode it means that the problem you are experiencing probably has to do with a recent change in hardware/software. Think about what changes you have implemented recently and if possible try to do undo them. You should test your computer after you have undone each recent change and you may find the problem.

So the next time you appear to have a problem with your PC hardware start by checking the obvious things such as the electric outlet, power supply and whether the cables are properly plugged in. If the problem does not lie in these obvious areas then switch your PC on and observe what happens. Make a note of what you do not see occurring or start your computer in safe mode to see if you find the fault that way. The more information you are able to give your computer technician the better they will be able to help you, minimize your expenditure and the amount of downtime your business experiences.

How to Troubleshoot a Dead Computer

March 27th, 2010

Is your Computer starting to act differently that sometimes it refuses to turn on? Or your Computer looks completely dead.? If you are experiencing this kind of Computer problems, all you need is just some troubleshooting techniques to try and free all your

Computer worries and headache.

Just follow the steps below to hopefully bring your Computer back to life.

The first thing you should do is check the power supply just to be sure that there is power available for your computer. Make sure the power switch is turned on and then try to plug a lamp in the wall socket to see if it works. If it does, you know there is power available. Once you know there is power, check to make sure the power cord is properly connected to the wall outlet and the computer power socket.

Note: Before you continue on to the next step, make sure your computer is completely shut down and be sure to disconnect it from the power cord as well. Also, keep in mind that all of your PC’s components are sensitive to static electric charges, so it’s important to ground yourself by touching the frame of your computer’s case before starting any of the troubleshooting processes. This will get your body used to the computer case and eliminate any chance of static shock.

The next thing you can troubleshoot is if all of the cards within your computer are fully pushed in to their slots. Open your computer’s system unit and push down on all the chips, the video card, the sound card, the modem or LAN cards, the memory cards and the CPU units to make sure everything is seated properly.

Now, check your computer again to see if you have been able to fix the problem. If not, keep troubleshooting! Next, check the power between the power supply you use and the motherboard on the back of your computer. If you need to, pull out and reinsert all of the cards. You can also try placing them in different slots until you find a perfect fit for all of them.

If you have not been able to resolve the issue, the next thing you can do is take out all non-essential parts from your computer, leaving only the basic ones in. The basic parts are the motherboard, the power supply, the display card, the controller and the hard drive. You can pull out everything else (mainly the other cards) by removing the screws from your unit, as shown in the screenshot below.

Now, replace each part that you took out one at a time until the problem reoccurs. When you replace a part and the computer stops working, you know that particular part is the reason for your computer problems. If this is the case, that part can just be replaced and your computer should then operate normally.

If you still see some issues, remove all of the remaining cards, including the display card and floppy controller. Then turn on the power just to see if the power supply is still running. If it does run, one of the cards you just removed is faulty. You will then need to get that one replaced.

These are just some simple techniques you can try to get your computer up and running again. Please use extreme caution when removing certain parts of your computer. If you are not completely sure on how to do it, get some help or take your computer to a repair shop so a professional can look at it. You do not want to risk creating other problems for your computer by doing an incorrect job.

Computer Repair Service Shop are charging so high nowadays. Some are charging 50 to 60 dollars per hour. So it’s really a must to learn some Basic Computer Troubleshooting Techniques. Visit my website;

Police Career – Linux Computer Systems in Law Enforcement

March 26th, 2010

Law enforcement recently has been following the general tide of government and public service groundswell by seeking computing solutions in the Linux direction. Particularly in law enforcement, their needs match well with open source software. They have to work lean on a taxpayer’s budget, and open source is free or low cost. They need top security, and Linux is still the highest-scoring operating software in official government assessments. They need mission-critical reliability, and Linux is so stable, it doesn’t just outrank the competition in stability – it makes the competition disappear!

Some recent examples of law enforcement agencies finding a solution in open source:

* Kent Police have lowered the cost of running their major criminal investigations system by a factor of 90% using Novell Linux Open Enterprise Server. The migration to Novell enabled Kent to scale up their Holmes II investigation system to work on larger projects with a broader scope – something they’d never been able to do before. They were also able to run it on their cheapest hardware they could find, thanks to Linux’s light requirements. A new policing operating system, named Genesis, is now being tested for scalability on Linux servers.

* Delivery of the first Linux systems to the West Yorkshire police force could see police forces throughout England and Wales unanimously switching to Linux desktops in a new pilot scheme. The deployment is taking place under a contract awarded by the UK Police IT Organization. If successful, it will lead to over 60,000 desktops deployed. In West Yorkshire alone, the installed base is around 3,500, and a spokesman reckoned that the savings from this would be around one million pounds per year!

* The New South Wales Police department is currently undertaking a major upgrade to its information infrastructure, made necessary due to the increasing volume of data handled by the force, and they’re switching to Linux systems to handle the load. Because the Linux systems are proving so reliable, they are looking forward to the higher capacity network more efficiently archiving and transmitting data stored as evidence, such as surveillance videos and audio material.

* Scottish police forces have also developed a Linux-based system for ensuring that they comply with the Freedom of Information Act legislation, an act which is intended to facilitate ‘open government’ by allowing the public to request access to government data. Since open source and open information go hand in hand, the system has scaled easily and saved tons of labor. The force doesn’t have to worry about proprietary media formats interfering with the public’s ability to access the data, and the efficiency of the Linux system allows a lot of manual tasks to be automated where they couldn’t before. The system is literally returning officers to the streets because it has saved everyone so much work.

* Police in the city of Munich have switched 14,000 of their department computers from Microsoft’s Windows operating system to Linux. The motivation for the decision was to make the government less dependent on one information technology supplier, and to save money while increasing capabilities. One technology analyst even compared the break-through migration to the fall of the Berlin wall, referring to the oppressive requirements of dealing with a proprietary software company’s agenda.

That government feels friendly with open source should come as no surprise. Traditionally, the Internet has been 80% Linux and Unix-based systems since its creation. The first Internet services were started and maintained by government providers, who used Unix system’s built-in multitasking features and excellent speed to create a fast, reliable network. Linux, a modern version of that Unix ideal, has already established itself as the leading system for server-room deployment, but now the effects are beginning to trickle down to the desktop user level and workstation deployments, where they are discovering that Linux systems have workspace-ready features built in which other commercial operating systems are just now beginning to discover and implement.

Furthermore, Linux systems come with the guarantee that because they are open source, no commercial company can restrict their usage in the future. A platform ported to Linux can stay on Linux, without support dying out and constant upgrades creating problems down the road.

Finally, the inherent security of the Unix computing model guarantees the effectiveness of Linux without the worries over security problems. Because there are in effect no viruses which can infect a Linux system known, and no critical security exploits found in the systems even by government security standards, departments are also considering Linux as a measure to protect our national data under concerns over national security and the terrorist threat in our modern times.

Guide To Becoming A Computer Forensics Specialist

March 26th, 2010

A computer forensics specialist is a person who is an expert in recovering lost technological data without disrupting or tampering with the device. It takes a whole lot of skills and patience to get back deleted or corrupted data from hard drives, cell phones, and computers and so on. What a specialist does is put his knowledge to work and apply his skills into revering what is necessary to help the police department in solving cyber crimes and such. If you’ve always found such work to be exciting or appealing, then here’s a simple guide on how to become a computer forensics specialist.

First, get an education. You would need to obtain you degree in computer forensics and work your way on from there. You could also just get a degree in accounting or computer science and learn your hands on skills through working in the field and picking up tips along the way. If you want, once you’ve gotten your degree, you could obtain a certificate in computer forensics to increase the chances of job opportunity.

Next, once you step into the working world, don’t go for the big things straight away but start small and gain all the experience you can. You may think that the small jobs are too small for you, but the hands on experience gives you great exposure and will increase your confidence in your own work as well. So go on out and start your journey to your career.

How to Fix a Computer or PC that is Not Booting/Starting Up? How Can I Fix my PC Without Having a Boot CD? Where Can I Get a Boot CD for Windows?

March 26th, 2010

How to Fix a Computer or PC that is Not Booting Up? How Can I Fix my PC Without Having a Boot CD? What Should I Do if I Don’t Have a Boot Disc? Where Can I Get a Boot CD for Windows?

One of my friend’s computer had numerous problems. He used to ignore all the error messages he gets in his Windows XP and continued to work with it, until the day it became dead.

And he asked me how he could revive it, because he was not even able to start his computer and didn’t know where his boot CD was.

He immediately came to me, because I usually help all my friends with their PC troubleshooting.

And when I asked him why his computer was a mess, he said that he really didn’t care about all the errors or it’s slow performance as long as it continued to boot and worked. He previously had freezing issues, Blue Screen of Death (BSOD), Start up error messages, OS errors and so on, and he just ignored all….until it stopped working.

I gave him a simple solution called Reimage. Since he didn’t have a boot CD. I asked him to build a boot CD first, with the instructions found on ‘Build a Boot CD’ page.

And after making a boot CD

He had to check this video ‘Using Boot CD with Reimage’ to fix his non booting PC located at the bottom right of the webpage, and then I asked him to click the Reimage link on the page for a ‘Free Scan’ to continue fixing his PC. The PC Repair tool fixed his computer within 30 minutes to revive the dead PC to as good as new PC.

He was so happy and amazed and praised the tool as “Magic” repair tool.

Reimage is not just a registry cleaner, anti-spyware, windows repair and an Anti-virus software… Reimage is a full-service, comprehensive “PC-Wash” that retrieves a “Just-Like-New” computer while keeping your personal data secure and protected.

In fact, Reimage not only detects and terminates Adware, Spyware, Trojans, Key-loggers, Identity Theft scripts, Hijackers, Tracking Threats, Rogue Anti-Spyware, Unwanted Software, Phishing and Popups.files- it also fixes ALL the damage they left behind. Again, this is just one of the many reasons why Reimage is so unique and superior. A registry cleaner will simply just delete the redundant entry in the windows registry, again it will not correct the damage, for that matter even the anti-virus programs would just delete the corrupted file or entry. But Reimage fixes the corrupted file by replacing the correct file from a huge Windows repository of 25 million OS components.

Reimage is an “All-in-One” PC Repair Solution – based on Patented Technology.
It is so high-end and professional that it is adopted (as a secret weapon) by PC
technicians for remote PC repair all over the globe. Reimage is the future of PC
Repair -It’s fully automated and it’s so easy to use.

Guide and tips on how to repair computer and troubleshoot pc

March 26th, 2010

Introduction

Computer problems can be upsetting. But most of them are minor and can be repaired easily, so don’t panic and take a deep breathe when pc problems happen to you.

Basic computer repair / pc troubleshooting tips and guide:

1. Check the power strip connection. Is the power indicator light lit? Make sure the power switch is turned on and to the correct AC voltage. Then shut down the power and check all the cables of your computer such as data cables, power cable, internal circuitry cables and cards if possible and devices like mouse, keyboard, monitor, etc. and make sure that everything is seated properly and working fine. You can push the cables or devices gently. Sometimes you need to actually unplug them from the computer and then plug in again.

2. When you notice a software or hardware error in your computer, try to find out what was changed before the problem occurred. In the meantime, you can google the error message and find a fix to the problem. The following are some common error messages and solutions:

a. “Non-System disk or disk error”: remove non-system diskette, USB, CD inserted before starting computer.
b. “Windows was not properly shut down. One or more of your disk drives may have errors on it.  Press any key to run ScanDisk on these drives.”: Press the enter key and allow the machine to do a scan and fix the problems.
c. “Not enough memory / Insufficient memory”: Close some programs and try again.
d. “My monitor is black”: Check power and cable connection. Check if it is in sleep mode, especially laptop.
e. “No sound”: Check if the speaker is plugged into the wrong socket, MIC. Also check Mute? Volume?
f. “Computer freezes”: Try Ctrl+Alt+Del. If it does not work, force the computer to power off by keeping on pressing power key until the pc shuts down. Then wait for about 10-15 seconds and re-start computer.

3. Use the event viewer utility by going to Start –> Control panel –> Administrative tools –> Event viewer. By using this tool, you will find the error or warning messages associated with any faulty hardware or software.
4. Check the hardware settings in the device manager of the system and make sure all the device drivers is up to date and working properly, that is, there is no error sign shown.
5. When you find a faulty component in your computer, you should check it with the other good computers so that you can make sure whether the component has problems or not before buying a new one.
6. If the above is ok and your computer still has problems, it might be the cause of virus or the registry / system files corrupted. You can find related tools to fix the problem. If the problem is serious, consider to re-install the Operating System. It is recommended that you create two partitions. One is for your OS and the other is for your data.
7. Finally, it is important to take a detailed note for future use.

Conclusion

When you try to repair a computer, it is important to find out what you did before and also your focus should be on power supply, video, mother board, CPU and the hard drive.
