The Truth About Hosting Virtual Servers on VMware vs Virtuozzo

June 30th, 2010

The difference between VMware and Virtuozzo Containers is more than just the name. Only hosting companies using VMware can offer complete flexibility, security and capacity, as well as options for high availability, load balancing and disaster recovery.

Operating System Flexibility

A basic difference between VMware and Virtuozzo is that VMware creates individual virtual servers directly on the hardware, at a bare metal level, while Virtuozzo’s containers run at the operating system (OS) level.

All container environments running on the same physical hardware must share the same host operating system. This means that while each environment can run its own client OS, the one you can run on your virtual environment will be limited to those that are compatible with the host. Virtuozzo is limited to Linux or Windows at both the host and client level, and can only run a client OS on a physical server that uses the same host OS; in other words, a Linux client on a Linux host, and a Windows client on a Windows host. Of course, limiting the operating system also limits your choice of software to that available for Linux and Windows.

Running at the hardware level, VMware accomplishes virtualization by using a physical machine’s hardware resources to serve multiple virtual servers, each of which can run an independent operating system. In this way, VMware virtualization supports many diverse operating systems on any server system. This allows VMware to support a variety of Windows versions and many different flavors of Linux, including Ubuntu, SuSE, and Red Hat, as well as non-Windows and Linux operating systems such as Solaris and Netware.

With Virtuozzo, because your virtual environment must run the same OS as the host, you don’t have the option to manage and modify your own operating system. The need for uniformity extends to updates—all environments must run at the same patch level. That means that if your virtual environment’s software has not been optimized for the latest Windows or Linux update, and your hosting company installs it (on the host system and across all virtual environments), your software may function poorly, or not at all.

With VMware, you can manage and modify your own operating system, as well as run different patch levels than the host system. This offers your company installation and update control on your virtual servers, and the freedom to use an extended range of software, software releases, and even multiple software flavors on the same OS, such as SQL Standard, Web and Express editions.

In Virtuozzo’s containers, when you need to reboot your virtual environment, such as during a test phase, you’ll have to wait for a scheduled system outage for the entire physical server, chaining you to your hosting company’s calendar. Using VMware, you can reboot your operating system when and as often as your situation requires.

Finally, a hardware-based virtual server like VMware offers something an OS-based virtual environment does not and cannot offer—virtual memory. Virtual memory, called swap in Unix or page file in Windows, allows your applications to use an assigned piece of disk space as working memory when necessary to avoid crashing. Because all container environments share an operating system core, containers don’t have independent access to swap. Using VMware, your hosting provider can give you swap space or a paging file as large as that available on a physical server.

Security

Virtual environments that all run the same operating system are more vulnerable to both security breaches and simultaneous code faults. If the virtual servers on a hosting physical server are all running one operating system, and any of the operating systems are hacked, then they all are; if the host operating system experiences a failure due to a bug in the software, then they all do. This is not the kind of virtual server environment you can depend on to failover gracefully or recover quickly.

In a Virtuozzo environment, security is complicated by the need for OS patches to be certified by the company. That means that when a critical operating system patch is released, the patch must go through another layer of complexity and time before it is applied—time in which your virtual server could be vulnerable. If your servers are hosted on VMware, you can apply patches as soon as they are released.

On-Demand Capacity

Because a VMware virtual server can operate on any physical server in the network, and because VMware supports live migration or vMotion, your whole virtual server can be moved as needed to another piece of hardware—with no downtime. This saves your company data and time, and it could save you customers and money. It also means that when your hosting company needs to take a physical server down for maintenance or replacement, you never need to know. Unlike in an OS virtual environment, live migration will allow your virtual server to continue running on the hosting company’s other servers. This is a feature that Virtuozzo still does not have.

High Availability, Load Balancing and Disaster Recovery Options

VMware virtual server lets your hosting company offer high availability, load balancing, and disaster recovery, unlike OS virtual environments. With VMware, your hosting company can offer load balancing, so your workload can run on the physical server that suits your needs during peak times.

With an OS-level environment, it might be impossible to move live data from one server to another. Even with compatible operating systems, the server might require a reboot.

When You’re Looking for Virtual Server Hosting, Think Infinitely Virtual

Virtual Server platforms aren’t all the same, and your hosting company needs to use the most flexible, secure and available virtualization technology. VMware, which runs virtual servers at the hardware level, is that technology.

All About Google AdWords

April 7th, 2010

The term “Google” has become a household name for anyone who doesn’t live under a rock, while the phrase “Google AdWords” has evolved to the point wherein every businessman is familiar with it. If you have yet to become exposed to AdWords, then you should read up on it now, for it could change the entire life of your growing business. It is thanks to Google AdWords that many famous companies today got their well-deserved exposure through the Internet. Aside from being Google’s main source of revenue, having amassed more than fifteen billion back in 2007, AdWords has helped many businesses flourish and accumulate their own wealth, because of its main product: pay-per-click advertising.

Google AdWords’ text advertising, although simple, is brilliant that way. You pay a small fee in order to have your ad pop up, which consists of one title line and two lines for content. Although thinking up of a short, quick slogan is challenging, the end result is worth it: you get to make creative, eyecatching lines that will encourage customers to visit your company’s website. You need not visit the company’s office all the way in New York City, for all transactions are, like Google itself, available online. After specifying the keywords you want to trigger your ads with, you are given the choice to input a maximum amount that you are willing to pay everytime someone clicks. How convenient is that? And when someone searches for your keywords, your ad has a good chance of showing up under the “sponsored links” bar on the right side of the page.

Many successful businesses have resulted from Google AdWords’ short but efficient system. Some companies have admitted to having their sales increase by up to fifty percent, after a short while of having bought Google adspace. Most businesses’ site traffic are bound to rise by a lot from the exposure. That is why Google AdWords is a good method, especially if you want your company to become a household name. It’ll take long before that happens, but the service helps a lot. You should not turn down an opportunity to give your business its well-deserved publicity!

One must take caution in giving such a business the publicity it deserves through the use of AdWords however. Since the launching of Google AdWords, Google has been subjected to quite a number of lawsuits along the lines of trademark law, click fraud and patent infringement. Because of these lawsuits and several other reasons, Google has become stricter and more cautious in what Ads were allowed to be advertised. An example would be how they would require the users to display a certificate in order for them to be granted permission to advertise such a product.

AdWords was initially launched in 2000, with a slightly different system: advertisers would pay a monthly amount for Google to set up and manage their campaign. This proved to be too expensive for local or small businesses, so eventually, the AdWords self-service system was introduced which allowed for more customization of ads. Since then, Google AdWords has become hugely successful with businesses and companies worldwide.

Pitfalls of a Newbie – What about Google Adsense?

April 3rd, 2010

Last month I submitted an application to Google to be considered for their AdSense program. After confirming my e-mail address, almost immediately I was invited to place ads on my website.
Within hours I began to accumulate some data on pageviews and click-throughs and could see what my month-to-date total was. I was impressed.

The JavaScript Code
When your website is approved, you’ll receive your own publisher number and the appropriate JavaScript code to paste onto your webpages.
When your page is displayed, here’s the process that Google probably goes through in showing the ads:

1. A visitor’s web browser requests a page on your site.
2. This activates the JavaScript code on the page, sending the URL of the requested webpage to Google’s database.
3. Google looks up in its database the most prominent keywords or keyphrases for that webpage.
4. Then Google searches for the highest paying ads that match these keywords
5. Google places the appropriate ads on your webpage for your visitor to see — all in seconds. Pretty nifty.

How Much Does Google AdSense Pay?
As a publisher, you share in the revenue that Google receives from its PPC ads. Google, however, hasn’t announced a formula for sharing revenue with publishers in its Terms and Conditions document. Google’s audacity to ask publishers to enter into a blind agreement is one measure of publishers’ hunger for advertising dollars — whatever dollars — and an indication of the trust Google experiences in today’s marketplace.

So what is the revenue split? We aren’t told, though the actual amounts are proportional to the market value of keywords that describe your content.

This gives me some idea of possible gross revenue for my site. I am not at liberty to disclose the average click-through rate and average PPC payment per click on my site, though that information is made available to me daily and cumulatively.

In talking to well-known marketers, I hear guesses of a publisher’s share ranging from 25% to 60%. For all we know Google could be striking different deals with different sites, especially those over 20 million pageviews per month that have greater clout in the marketplace. I would guess the publisher’s share to be as much as 50% of the gross PPC revenue — though I could be way off. None of us has enough information to make an accurate judgment and Google isn’t talking.

What the Godfather gives, we bow and accept gratefully without any questions for fear he might put out a contract on our websites.
Here are the factors that contribute to the amount of money you can make on your site:

1. PPC value of the predominant keywords on your website. “Life insurance” for example, would be high. “Fish tank filters” would be low.
2. Amount of traffic you generate to your web pages.
3. Prominence of the Google ads
4. Click-through rate for the ads that appear.
5. The unknown revenue share that Google is paying.

Business-focused sites will do very well with Google AdSense, but information sites that don’t contain high-paying keywords won’t receive nearly as much.

Will They Accept My Site?
Google AdSense tells us that the following sites are not acceptable: sites with excessive profanity; hate, violence, racial intolerance, or advocate against any individual, group, or organization; hacking/cracking content; drugs and drug paraphernalia; pornography; gambling or casino-related; content; incentives of any kind for users to click on ads; excessive advertising; other content-targeted and/or text-based ads on the pages displaying AdWords ads; pop-ups that interfere with site navigation or are for downloads; and ads that mimic AdWords ads or appear to be associated with AdWords ads on your site. Google says it will monitor sites that are showing their ads and suspend sites that don’t abide by their rules.

Does a person from Google look at a site before deciding to accept it into the program?
If it’s a new site with little traffic, a human surely views the site. Don’t submit a site that isn’t ready for prime time, has “under construction” signs, or looks tacky. It’s a lot easier to get your site ready first, than try to convince Google to re-examine a rejected site. On the other hand, if your site has lots of incoming links and is generously spidered by Google already, you might receive approval within minutes after confirming your e-mail address.
Once you are approved, you can login and get HTML to paste into your webpages.

The Automatic Ad Agency
If you’ve ever worked with ad agencies or tried to solicit individual advertisers to place ads on your site, then Google AdSense will feel like a breath of fresh air. Google handles the entire relationship with advertisers. There are no run dates for publishers to schedule, no banners to install, no invoicing, no reporting. Just apply, paste in the JavaScript code, and Google’s “automatic advertising agency” works for you day and night finding willing advertisers, taking orders, and matching appropriate advertisers with your site.

Problems for Publishers
That doesn’t mean, however, that Google AdSense is problem-free. As I mentioned above, Google’s unwillingness to specify revenue share percentages doesn’t bode well. Sure, Google is just feeling its way in uncharted territory and has to stay profitable when the inevitable competition arises. I don’t think publishers should get too confident in Google’s current largesse. What Google gives, Google can take away — either as a result of economic squeezes or greed.

A more mundane problem is finding inappropriate ads appearing on your webpages. Fortunately, this is much easier to fix. You can filter out any ads you find from competitors or that you find distasteful. (I had to exclude some ads for cheapo e-mail addresses to spam with.) Just list the advertiser’s domain name under Advanced Options | Site Filter List.

What do you do when the ad just doesn’t seem to correspond to the content on your webpage?
Adding the appropriate keywords or keyphrases to the title tag, Meta description tag, and headlines should help Google do a better job of matching ads with your content.

Problems for Advertisers
Advertisers who use Google AdWords have the choice of limiting their ad to show only on the Google search engine, but you can choose whether campaigns also appear on the network of search sites, the network of content sites, or both.

Google AdSense on content sites gives advertisers a new opportunity. Previously, their revenues were limited by the click-throughs that could be generated on Google’s search engine and search partner sites. Now the pool of appropriate content sites is greatly widened, offering greater traffic and more sales. But their is a price for this greatly increased ad coverage — potentially lower responsiveness for the same cost per click.

When people use a search engine, they are looking for answers or solutions to click on. But when they are reading the text of a content site, they aren’t in the same searching, clicking mode. They’ve already found what they were searching for and are now trying to absorb it. This will affect the click-through rate, but also the likelihood that these users will complete a transaction.

Publishers are rejoicing today. But what if three months from now advertisers come to the conclusion that content sites are less responsive and routinely exclude them from their advertising coverage? Or refuse to pay the same prices for content sites that they do for search engine exposure? It’s too soon to tell.

Implications of Google AdSense
One thing is certain: Google AdSense is changing the way websites are being monetized.
AdSense “rewards you for creating sites rich in high-quality, focused content … the sort of sites that make the Net a better place.” Google is going to grab a whole lot of business away from those who try to ‘make crime pay’ — no need for nasty tricks, useless marketing gambits, in-your-face ads, etc.

Instead, Google is rewarding those who ‘make grime pay’” — that is, those willing to do the hard work to produce quality, focused content.

Thought for today:
Should you apply to put Google AdSense on your website? If your site seems appropriate, yes, by all means do so. Google AdSense represents a significant opportunity for content publishers to monetize their content. And so long as this partnership benefits both publishers and advertisers who pay the bills, this could be the start of a new and brighter future for both.

Facts About PHP

March 30th, 2010

What is PHP?
PHP is a scripting language that was designed originally for the production of featured dynamic web pages. PHP has since evolved to include a command line interface ability that can be used in a standalone graphical application dynamic.

Facts about PHP
PHP was designed and developed by a man named Rasmus Lerdorf in 1995, however, since then, control of the implementation and script maintenance is now conducted by a PHP Group, a sort of cyber governing body on PHP scripting.
PHP is a free software released under a license called the PHP license, however, this is not compatible with the GNU General Public license or GPL because of restrictions and terms of use for PHP.
PHP is normally used for general scripting purposes, though it is specially suited for web page development and is one of the premier means to embed HTML format. PHP generally runs on a type of web server that is configured to take the script and input it for the sake of creating web page content. PHP can also be deployed on many web servers, and on just about any other operating system or platform for no cost to the user. PHP has been installed on more than 25 million websites and over 1 million web servers.
PHP scripts also are normally kept as readable source code on production of web servers. PHP is compiled at the runtime of the script as it common with other script codes and languages. This makes its read time by the computer much easier.
Accessories for PHP are also available to make this script easier to read and go faster on the computer on which it is installed. These are called PHP accelerators. PHP accelerators provide performance gains by decoding the compiled form of PHP script in the computer’s shared memory to avoid overheating due to under-compiled code.

Business Communication Services – About Hosted Voip

March 27th, 2010

Contemporary business communication services are reaping big rewards from using VoIP phone systems. Professional VoIP providers worldwide are helping to create improved business services through the use of these phone systems. A PBX phone replacement system enables many features and benefits which have made business communication an asset, instead of simply a necessity. The telephony functionality has enabled improved business services to race ahead in their capabilities as time, money and effort are saved and capitalised on.

Hosted VoIP works by using a broadband internet connection. Through this fast connection, internet protocol is created (IP). The internet telephone systems create business communication services which are efficient and very fast. However, an IP connection offers far more features and benefits than normal PSTN lines.

Business communication services are converting more frequently to VoIP services by the day. PBX systems are becoming unnecessary as VoIP services are the favourite of businesses globally. Companies remaining on a PSTN and PBX supported line are literally falling behind in providing adequate services for their clients as they cannot deliver at their potential best. Old technology is restricting their functioning capabilities.

How hosted VoIP works
VoIP business communication services allow subscribers to control their phone systems over the internet through application servers provided by a hosted VoIP service provider. When making a call, voice signals are converted into data packets and sent via a hosted VoIP platform to the PSTN line or VoIP terminal to which the call is being made. When the voice data arrives at the required destination, the system converts the data packets back into voice signals.

The features
A VoIP system can have many branches. This means that the system can have many extensions and lines, carrying usability further. This allows companies to build large communication networks without expensive line rental, as VoIP is run through the internet and over a centralised platform. Receptionists can manage multiple calls through this centralised system if required.

VoIP subscribers are able to exercise much greater control over their phone systems than previously. System controls are run over the internet and allow subscribers to customise their requirements in real time. Training is generally not an issue as the user-friendly features are very easy to navigate. The phone systems are able to follow a user when moving locations through the use of softphones: software functioning as a telephone handset on their computer which does not need to be limited to one location. Calls are also very manageable. A subscriber will be able to choose when, where and from whom they receive calls.

The controls on a VoIP interface can be configured by any user and do not require technicians or specialists. Call-outs are not required and professional VoIP providers will offer a free 24 hour help-line, 365 days per year with qualified and experienced technicians to help with any problems experienced. Companies wishing to manage the controls and user features of a hosted VoIP system can use a tool for managing each branch of a system, usually overseen by IT managers. In addition, detailed billing is offered allowing businesses even greater control and awareness surrounding their subscription.

Voicemail and faxes are easily manageable with hosted VoIP. Voicemails can be listened to through an internet connection or through a normal PSTN phone or converted to emails and sent to an inbox to be listened to when convenient. Similarly, fax messages are converted into data and also sent to the subscriber’s inbox, where the data can be read as well as forwarded on.

The benefits
These features have enabled VoIP systems to become the most successful business communication systems. There are many benefits to using hosted VoIP, especially to users needing superior business communication services.

A business can cut costs drastically by using professional VoIP providers for their communication needs. Calls between VoIP sites are free. This enables employees to stay in contact from remote locations across the globe when on business trips or working from home.

All About Linux

What is Linux?

Linux is an operating system created by Linus Torvalds during his days as a student at the University of Helsinki. Linux was created and meant to be used as an option or substitute to the other operating systems being used by computer users, like MS-DOS, Windows, Mac OSX, etc. Linux is not a program or a set of programs like a word processor of an office suite.

A Brief History

While studying at the University of Helsinki, Linus used a version of the UNIX operating system called ‘Minix’. Several requests for modifications and improvements for the operating system were being sent by Linus and other users to Andrew Tanenbaum, Minix’s creator, but he felt that they weren’t necessary. Therefore, Linus decided to create his own operating system; one that would take into account the users’ comments and suggestions for improvements.

A “kernel” is the focal point of any operating system. Without going into great detail, the kernel tells the CPU to do what you want the program or application that you’re using to do. An operating system would not exist without a kernel. However, a kernel is also useless without any programs or applications.

In 1991, two critical situations evolved that would serve as the starting point for Linux. A kernel was already created by Linus, but he had no programs to use; some programs were available from GNU and Richard Stallman, but they had no working kernel. So Linux was born by combining the programs from Richard and GNU in Cambridge, Massachusetts, with the kernel provided by Linus in Helsinki, Finland. It was a lot of ground to cover and far to travel, so the Internet became the primary method of getting Linus’ kernel together with the GNU programs. It can almost be said that Linux is an operating system that came to life on the Internet.

Not For Everybody at First

Other software companies will sell you software contained in a CD or a set of floppies, together with a brief instruction booklet, and in half an hour or probably even less, you could install a fully functional operating system on your computer. You only needed to know how to read and follow instructions in order to install it. This was what those companies had in mind when they developed their operating systems. However, when Linux was developed by Linus, this factor wasn’t initially considered. Later on, Red Hat and other likeminded companies made it their purpose to develop Linux to the point where it could be easily installed just like any other operating system in the market, by anyone who can follow simple instructions, and today we can definitely say that they have succeeded in this particular purpose.

Linux Today

Nowadays, there is a great deal of favorable reactions from computer users regarding Linux. The fact that Linux has proven to be impressively stable and versatile, especially as a network server, surely has played a big part in this popularity. Down-time is minor or insignificant when Linux is installed and used as a web server or in corporate networks. Many cases have been reported wherein Linux-powered servers have been functioning smoothly for even more than a year without needing to re-boot, and when it had to be taken down, it was only for a brief period for maintenance purposes. Its cost effectiveness has become to be one of its strongest selling points. Linux can be installed and run on either a home PC or a network server, without having to spend as much as it would be for other software packages. More reliability and less cost – it’s ideal.
