The ERP Marketplace 2010

October 20th, 2010

The last great boom for ERP was at the end of the 1990s, as large numbers of organisations around the world replaced their legacy applications in response to the potential doomsday scenario that was looming as a result of the Y2K bug. There were literally dozens of ERP vendors in the market, most of which prospered and grew at an impressive rate in a buoyant market.

Since those heady days, the ERP vendor landscape has changed dramatically. Today, as shown below, six vendors account for almost two thirds of global ERP sales and SAP and Oracle alone own 50% of the global market by revenue. Two of the top six vendors, Infor and Microsoft, did not have an ERP presence at all at the start of the last decade.

Fig 1: Percentage of Global ERP Revenue by Vendor (2008)

This has come about largely as a result of significant rationalisation as vendors sought to ward off static or declining revenues by acquiring other ERP products that provided access to new markets in different business sectors, geographies or client market segments.

While the rationalisation process has reduced the number of ERP vendors, it has not done much to reduce the number of ERP products – since the majority of the products gained by acquisition are still being sold by their new owners. The range of products tends to reflect the nature of competition in the ERP market.

Typically, ERP products compete either horizontally by market segment or vertically by industry segment. SAP and Oracle dominate the ERP market in large organisations. Occasionally, Infor, Lawson or Microsoft will win projects in this segment, particularly if the customer is close to the lower boundary, but for really large organisations the choice almost always comes down to either SAP or Oracle.

At the small enterprise end of the market, Sage, Microsoft, SAP, Infor and to a lesser extent Lawson, compete with a number of smaller vendors of ERP systems, as well as a myriad of accounting packages and Best-of-Breed systems that offer elements of ERP functionality. It is noteworthy that of the top six vendors, only SAP and Sage have specific ERP products designed for the small enterprise market – the other vendors compete in this segment with products that they also use for the mid-market.

The mid-market segment is the only one in which all of the top six vendors compete, along with a range of vendors of other ERP products. Many of these products have been designed specifically for particular industry segments e.g. process manufacturing, project-oriented services, pharmaceutical distribution, etc. In order to compete successfully against these, the leading ERP vendors have had to add sector-specific focus to their product offerings. This has been approached in a number of ways:

Development by the ERP vendor of industry-specific, pre-configured templates using a standard ERP product (e.g. Oracle’s Business Accelerators or SAP’s Best Practice Templates). The templates are fully supported by the ERP vendor and are intended to provide a lower cost implementation by removing the need to configure the system from scratch.
Addition of new vertical-specific functionality to a standard ERP product by a value-added reseller (VAR) (e.g. VAR-modified versions of the different Microsoft Dynamics or Sage products). The enhanced versions of the product are primarily supported by the VAR rather than the ERP vendor.
Acquisition of ERP products that have been designed specifically for industry verticals (e.g. Microsoft’s acquisition of the Fullscope Process Manufacturing solution for AX, Infor’s acquisition of SX.e for Distribution or Lawson’s of M3 for Manufacturing). Once the product has been acquired, the buyer provides product support.

One important point to make about the competitive landscape for ERP products is that the neat delineations suggested by the market segments and verticals just described do not always translate into a logical choice of ERP product. For example, most ERP vendors will be able to point to customers outside of their primary target market segment who are successfully using one of their products. Sometimes, organisations will choose a generic ERP product rather than one tailored for their industry vertical, often because of concerns about the longevity of the tailored product or of the organisation that supports it.

Finally, many larger organisations do not choose a single ERP product. The hub-spoke model is becoming more common, where a single ERP product (usually SAP or Oracle) is used to drive group financials and the larger divisions, with a mid-market or even small enterprise ERP system deployed in some of the smaller parts of the organisation.

Steve Mills: 2010 Will Be The Establishment Within The Enterprise Cloud Into The Sky-Year Vmware

July 4th, 2010

Steve Mills: 2010 will be the establishment within the enterprise cloud into the sky-year VMware

CBI: For 2010, the application virtualization market, hot spots and trends, you mentioned several times “cloud computing” and that “2010 will be the establishment within the enterprise cloud Year” this view. In response to this trend, VMware made what preparations?

Steve Mills: In the past everyone cloud computing can be described as divergent views, have their own different opinions and views, but now the industry has gradually reached a consensus: Cloud computing is the evolution of next-generation computing model. Each customer must establish their own cloud computing model, its first step is to complete the internal clouds or private clouds formed. Establishment of scientific and technological base within the cloud is that virtualization, which will also become a driving force continued to rise Sony VGP-BPS2 Battery the virtualization market, the growth momentum. Overall, both the degree of maturity of the technology or changes in market demand, will be promoted in 2010 will be the establishment within the enterprise cloud Year.

For VMware, in fact the earlier years, we will enhance the company’s products to a higher level, and raised some very advanced cloud computing-based solutions. Last year, in April, the company also released the industry’s first operating system used to build internal clouds VMware vSphere4. At the same time, VMware is designed to help customers from internal and external clouds clouds at any time, on-demand and secure access to computing power needed to plan vCloud breakthrough has been made, has more than 1000 companies of various sizes for customers VMware-based cloud product delivery.

Through a series of actions, VMware customer towards cloud computing wave of demand has always maintained a leading position, while the enterprise market has also been wide response and support.

CBI: In the current environment, your company can give to the channel partners what specific support?

Steve Mills: VMware channel strategy is the overall strategy is very important component, but also of our entire eco-system, a very important part.

VMware’s global channel is divided into two categories, first, IBM, Hewlett-Packard, Dell, EMC, Cisco and other global partners, in the Chinese market we have to do is in line with a global framework agreement to strengthen the local implementation; another is more important is that we Chinese local partner, from the total generation to the SI, ISV, SP and HP Pavilion ZV5000 Battery channel partners with local partners with the top priority of our work.

Our channel partners have consistently upheld the principle that: First of all, VMware’s products and programs should always be ahead of the market, providing customers what they want; Secondly, the channel management more transparent, so that channel can get maximum benefits; In addition, to the channel more training to enhance their overall program of the software and service capabilities, and helped them make a faster transition, thereby expanding their market advantage.

CBI: We have seen over the past one or two years, VMware in the regional market expansion aspect of no small accomplishment. The current progress made;

Steve Mills: VMware for the regional market is very valued. In particular, more than a year ago, we launched with the support of the headquarters of China’s rapid market growth initiatives. The first step on the selection of the North, on the wide outside the seven cities, and plan our sales and technical support staff. This proved to be very correct, based on local, not only allows us to better understand the needs of local partners and customers, but also for our local market to do a good basis for further input. At present, the company has launched the second phase investment plan, the future, VMware will also be covered in the regional market a more comprehensive and in-depth.

CBI: From the perspective of industrial applications, for many companies prepare for the deployment of virtualization users, you are right what proposals they have to share?

Steve Mills: I think it is more important is, both for our partners, or customers, he is considering the deployment of virtualization, there are several options: First, how clearly you have no reason to do virtualization, you can go to download an open-source free software, running some very basic virtualization capabilities. However, to the second step, your business needs to further applications need to have a comprehensive enterprise data center or desktop, when the product does not have to upgrade and grow with the space. Secondly, the choice of virtualization options, but also take into account the future of your business computing environment, IBM ThinkPad R50 battery system is available on the heterogeneous network environment support. If these do not take into account good, this program can only solve some of your current primary issues that may go elsewhere in the future.

The VMware solution is very comprehensive and complete. VMware has a very clear product roadmap that tells users how to implement a step by step, but also wishes to adopt more market and training activities to devote more experience-sharing to more partners and users.

Many people speak highly of Sony psp camera. Why? It is because it will bring many unexpected surprises. To sum up, there are 4 points.

1)You can edit your own photos and movies by adding background music, effects. Also, you have a variety of other options.

2)Sony psp camera is an official and amazing product with Chotto Shot UMD software. Chotto Shot UMD software can work on all version of PSP. But there is a point that must be mentioned here. Chotto Shot UMD software is Japanese version.

3)It is a 1.3 megapixel one. It is with a wide-angle lens that can plug into the PSP’s USB port at the top. What is more, the camera can be swiveled 180 degrees, either pointing at you (handy for self-portraits) or away, for point and click action at anything you fancy.

Web Design in Philadelphia for 2010

October 8th, 2009

Web Design in Philadelphia for 2010

It’s a new year, a new decade, and if you’re still staring at your same old, stale website, you may want to add a new resolution; update your website. Before looking for new web design in the Philadelphia area, you may want to review trends in web design, and to consider some predictions about what will last so that you can invest without spending a fortune over and over again.

Of course web design is somewhat like fashion, trendy and beautiful in the eyes of the designer. However there are a few classic design trends that I believe will continue throughout 2010 and beyond.

Content Management Systems – these types of websites can actually save you money on maintenance. Open source CMS systems like WordPress, Joomla, and Drupal have matured into wonderful website template architectures with purely customizable themes. You no longer have to make a trade off between boxy, ridged design versus the ability to edit and create your own pages if you don’t know a program language. These architectures also make use of CSS (cascading style sheets) and very search engine friendly structures, which is an added bonus. Many developers prefer using these CMS systems because it makes programming quicker and easier.

Social Applications – I don’t think the social networks like LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter are going to go away, so websites will have to begin interacting more with them, and include more social aspects like events, comments, ratings, forums, and interactivity. This means that developers will be using more 3rd party libraries which use AJAX like mootools, jquery and prototype for interactive buttons, and frameworks like zend, cakephp, and symfony to handle the complex interactivity between applications.

Mobile phones – make sure your website works well on most mobile devices, especially the iPhone and Blackberry. Also make sure your website and blog are connected to your Facebook and LinkedIn pages. There are about 22.4 million internet phone users searching the web for news and information. According to ComScore the number of users has doubled from last year. ComScore also says that more than 9 million users are accessing social sites from their mobile devices – this includes blogs and social networks. While you are designing that new website for 2010, make sure you consider that your visitors may be searching for you and researching you while they are on the move, not just when they are in front of their office or home computers.

The “Look” of the website – a website is sort of like a car or a kitchen. You can almost tell what year it was designed by the colors, fonts, and general layout. The trends for 2010 include design aspects borrowed from print. This includes a design grid type style with lots of white space, large type (for increasingly aging users), mixing illustrations and textures with actual photos and videos, colorful designs, and a clear navigation path. Less seems to be more in website design this year. Greens and earth tones also seem to be popular as people seek more ecological and organic looking websites. Even logos seem to be trending away from glossy designs to textured, organic designs.

Fonts using sIFR – Scalable Inman Flash Replacement has been around for a couple of years, but designers are just starting to really make use of it by creating customized titles using JavaScript, Flash, and CSS. Instead of creating cool looking fonts for titles with images, sIFR can dynamically create text using whatever font you want. The search engines and visitors with non-Flash browsers can also still read the text (but of course it won’t look beautiful to them).

Photo and Video – A trend with faster internet connections is the ability to show video and photos of real people, rather than scaled down graphics which load faster. In 2009 video was a big part of many sites, and I see this trend continuing and increasing as the technology becomes easier and easier to use.

Short pages – Google Caffeine will probably shape the design trends in 2010 as developers quickly try to make sure that their sites continue to rank in the new search algorithm. Some things we already know about Caffeine are that website pages should be shorter and focused on a single topic, and that current pages with fast load times will rank higher in search results.

Web design in Philadelphia for 2010 will be a continuation of the trends that started last year, with an emphasis on usability and interaction. Since US web design jobs are predicted to grow by about 10% through 2016, and web development jobs are going to grow by about 30% in that same time period, the trend toward more web design in Philadelphia seems justified.

Best-Selling Author On Servlets And Jsp, Marty Hall, To Keynote At Gids 2010

September 10th, 2009

GIDS is the Biggest Independent Summit for India’s IT Professional Ecosystem. Registration for Event Open.

Bangalore, March 5, 2010: Marty Hall is an expert on JSP, servlets, Jakarta Struts, JSF, Ajax, GWT and Java programming. He is the author of six popular books on Java and Web technology that have been worldwide bestsellers, been translated into 15 languages, as well as being reprinted in English in India. Marty is coming this summer to India’s biggest summit for the software developer ecosystem — Great Indian Developer Summit (http://www.developersummit.com/) — to conduct a keynote address comparing various approaches to building rich Internet applications with Ajax. Although it is widely used in diverse types of Web applications, Ajax development is difficult, and there are several fundamentally different strategies to building Ajaxified Web applications. At GIDS 2010, to be held 20-23 April in Bangalore, Marty’s keynote address will survey the three most important of these approaches: using an Ajax-enabled JavaScript library such as jQuery, Prototype, Scriptaculous, Dojo or Ext/JS, using a Web framework such as JSF 2.0 or Struts 2 that has integrated Ajax support, and using the Google Web Toolkit (GWT) to build “pure Java” Ajax applications. The talk will compare and contrast these three approaches, discussing the types of applications that fit best for each option.

At GIDS Marty will also conduct several in-depth sessions — comparing the most popular JavaScript libraries to help choose the best Ajax/JavaScript Toolkit that fits your needs, explaining how Version 2.0 of the Google Web Toolkit works and the types of applications for which it is best suited, teaching how with JSF 2.0 developers can Ajaxify their applications with little or no JavaScript programming, and discussing the powerful yet relatively simple tools the Prototype library provides for various types of Ajax requests.

Marty has authored Core Servlets and JavaServer Pages, More Servlets and JavaServer Pages and Core Web Programming. Core Servlets and JSP is the single most popular book on servlets and JSP internationally, was selected by amazon.com as one of the best five computer programming books of the year, has been the overall weekly #1 bestseller at fatbrain.com nine different times, and spent more than six months as one of the top 10 best-selling computer-related books at amazon.com and at Borders stores. He has given lectures and training courses in seven countries and dozens of US venues, including speaking five times at JavaOne. He also directs the Java and Web technology concentration areas in the Johns Hopkins University part-time graduate program in Computer Science. Marty is the president of coreservlets.com, a US-based consulting and training company focused on Ajax and Java EE.

Every year, GIDS is a game changer for several thousands of IT professionals, providing them with a competitive edge over their peers, enlightening them with bleeding-edge information most useful in their daily jobs, helping them network with world-class experts and visionaries, and providing them with a much needed thrust in their careers. Attend Great Indian Developer Summit to gain the information, education and solutions you seek. From post-conference workshops, breakout sessions by expert instructors, keynotes by industry heavyweights, enhanced networking opportunities, and more.
