Guide To Becoming A Heavy Equipment Operator

June 18th, 2007

Most people think that the work of a heavy equipment operator is limited to operating a heavy tipping truck or a bulldozer. This is not true. There are many other heavy machinery and equipment that a heavy equipment operator requires to be proficient in operating. In addition, the job is not gender specific, and this field offers employment both to men and women. If you are able to operate large and heavy machinery, are prepared to work in a team, have adequate communication skills, and are ready to accept suggestions for improvement, you can certainly be successful in pursuing a career as a heavy equipment operator.

The job of a heavy equipment operator does not fall under any designated profession or trade. A heavy equipment operator is required to operate, maintain and adjust huge and heavy machinery used mostly in the construction industry and also in several other industries like mining, fishing, logging etc. Operators also find work at freight jobs, travel, and refuse collection routes. Most heavy equipment operators get trained on the job.

A number of schools have come up in different parts of the country to cater to the educational needs for a career as a heavy equipment operator. These courses include basics of analytical and diagnostic techniques along with instructions for in-depth understanding of the principles of electronics. To cater to the demanding nature of the job, such courses also have a strong practical and hands-on training profile.

There are several sub-categories in the job of a heavy equipment operator, such as mechanics, repairers, collision repair technicians etc. Some of these require a certification, which is renewable every five years.

Apart from the educational requirements the most essential criterion of eligibility is possession of a CDL or commercial driver’s license. If you possess any experience in driving some type of construction machinery, trucks and tractors etc. it is an added advantage for employment. Other desirable attributes for employment include the ability to judge distances, work in a team, to be open to new ideas and suggestions for improvement, be ready for additional training and responsibility. Jobs as an apprentice are available for candidates having completed formal training programs in heavy equipment operations. However, salary for apprentices at best remains nominal for entry-level positions.

Heavy equipment operators are required to operate, maintain and adjust machines like excavators, bull dozers, loaders, shovels, heavy duty tippers, forklift trucks, graders, drilling machines, cranes, motor graders, asphalt pavers, vibratory road rollers, compactors, skid steer loaders, pipe layers, compactors, pile drivers etc. On junior operator levels the work consists of operating small equipment like small rubber tire loaders and monitoring equipment. Later on with greater experience moving on to heavier machines is possible. With ongoing training and promotions, it is possible to reach senior positions like foreman, trainer, safety officer, or superintendent.

The job prospects are quite good for heavy equipment operators. Nearly all towns and cities have manufacturing facilities and construction sites where heavy equipment operators need exist, so it is easy to relocate to a fresh location without much worry about finding a new job.

Heavy Equipment Careers are easier when you work with the right training company. National Training has over 35,000 graduates and is fully DETC accredited. To learn more and hear from real graduates working and earning money visit: http://www.earthmoverschool.com

Educational Qualifications For A Heavy Equipment Operator

June 17th, 2007

If you intend pursuing a career in heavy equipment operation, you will be successful if you have a knack for using different kinds of machinery. A heavy equipment operator is required to handle big sized and heavy machinery used in various industries like mining, construction, and agriculture. Machines used in these industries comprise mostly of hydro-mechanical equipment, which requires specialized knowledge, skills, and training for proper maintenance, repair and operation.

Usually these machines are employed for grading, landscaping, excavation, and transportation on equipment, personnel, and materials. If one compiles all machines, categorized as heavy equipment into a list, it would be a very long list indeed. However, everyone is familiar with the more common machines that operate on construction sites, mines, and landfill sites, etc., such as excavators, bull dozers, loaders, shovels, heavy duty tippers, forklift trucks, graders, drilling machines, cranes, motor graders, asphalt pavers, vibratory road rollers, compactors, skid steer loaders, pipe layers, compactors, pile drivers etc.

Pursuing any career that requires possessing specialized skills needs specific technical education. A career in the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment requires an operator to undergo technical education, which includes modules that cover methods of operation and preventive maintenance and basic safety of heavy equipment mentioned above including backhoes, tractors etc. In course of his duties, the heavy equipment operator not only operates but also makes adjustments and minor repairs to mammoth machines, which despite their huge size are extremely delicate in many respects. These machines are very costly and are fitted with sophisticated, sensitive high tech systems and components, which damage easily if not handled with proper care.

Rapid advancement in technology finds these machines getting more sophisticated and complex with each passing day. A simple bulldozer with all attachments can easily cost over half a million dollars. Heavy equipment and machinery cost so much, therefore employers are increasingly becoming aware of the need of properly qualified personnel to operate and maintain these machines; they usually refuse to employ unqualified personnel.

This situation has made qualified heavy equipment operators much in demand. This demand will continue to rise day by day as more heavy machines are in operation; government and private industries funnel billions of dollars into new projects. Any number of fresh new hydro-electric plants, flood control projects, dams, and transmission facilities are coming up everywhere in the country with a proportionate number of heavy machines put to use.

As the need for qualified heavy equipment operators increases, the National Association of Heavy Equipment Training Schools (NAHETS) makes educational and training facilities available to create a greater pool of highly qualified heavy equipment operators. This Association, formed by the combined efforts of top-notch heavy equipment training schools, promotes high technical standards and offers special operators training on new generation of high tech machines. The NAHETS schools curriculum includes theoretical as well as practical and hands on training on the latest machines used today. Other than NAHETS, The National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) provides heavy equipment operator certification.

Heavy Equipment Careers are easier when you work with the right training company. National Training has over 35,000 graduates and is fully DETC accredited. To learn more and hear from real graduates working and earning money visit: http://www.earthmoverschool.com

Understanding net operating income

June 15th, 2007

The income statement of a firm indicates the flow of sales, expenses and earnings during a period of time, typically on a monthly, quarterly or yearly basis.

Net Operating Income (NOI) is the product of subtracting operating expenses from gross income, excluding depreciation and amortization. In particular:

Gross income: it includes any type of income associated with a property such as plant and equipment, parking fees, vending receipts etc.

Operating expenses: they are costs incurred during the operation and maintenance of a property.  They include repairs and maintenance, insurance, management fees, utilities, supplies, property taxes, etc.

Depreciation: it is an annual charge that reflects the estimated costs of the assets used during a specific period, typically a year. Depreciation refers typically to the plant and equipment, i.e. the tangible assets of the firm and it is subtracted after Net Operating Income is calculated in order to calculate the Net Income of the firm.

Amortization: it is an annual charge that reflects the estimated costs of the assets used during a specific period, typically a year. Amortization refers typically to the intangible asses of the firm such as loans, patents, goodwill etc. and it is subtracted after Net Operating Income is calculated in order to calculate the Net Income of the firm.

Example

We assume the following income statement in order to calculate the Net Operating Income (NOI) of firm X:

1/ Calculating Gross Income

Net Sales = 38,000$

Cost of Sales = 23,700$

Gross Income = Net Sales – Cost of Sales = 38,000$ – 23,700$ = 14,300$

2/ Calculating Operating Expenses

Rent = 1,000$

Salaries = 3,500$

Utilities = 400$

Supplies = 1,500$

Equipment Repair and Maintenance = 150$

Advertising & Promotion = 1,600$

Loan Interest = 250$

Operating Expenses = 1,000$ + 3,500$ + 400$ + 1,500$ + 150$ + 1,600$ + 250$ = 8,400$

3/ Calculating Net Operating Income (NOI)

Net Operating Income = Gross Income – Operating Expenses = 14,300$ – 8,400$ = 5,900$

Net Operating Income (NOI) is used when calculating the Operating Profit Margin ratio of a firm. Operating Profit Margin ratio measures the operating efficiency of a firm indicating if the relationship of the fixed costs to the production volume. The higher the ratio, the better a company is because this indicates that the firm’s fixed costs are lower than the firms’ gross income.

The ratio is calculated as follows:

Operating Profit Margin = Net Operating Income (NOI) / Net Sales.

Assuming above example and plugging in our data in the formula we derive that:

Operating Profit Margin = Net Operating Income (NOI) / Net Sales = 5,900$ / 38,000$ = 15.5%

This means that firm X makes $0.15 before interest and taxes for every dollar of sales.

The Invention Of Operation Table

June 14th, 2007

The invention concerns an operation table comprising a telescopic supporting column on which is mounted a support device with rotating mounting for a divisible, rotatable ring in which are mounted one above the other two beds for a patient to lie on where the beds with their support device are rotatable in the vertical plane.

There are a number of known devices for enabling the turning and movement of an operation table on which a patient who is to be operated on is lying. Particularly in the case of back operations and brain operations, but also for some other types of operations it may be vital to be able to place the patient in exactly the right position, with the correct curvature of the back or at a particular angle for the best possible angle of incidence to the operating site. It can also be important to be able to tilt the patient during the operation in order to avoid vomiting and nausea. Furthermore, it is important to be able to turn the patient when the patient’s head has to be facing upwards for the administration of the anesthetic, while having to turn him afterwards in the case of, e.g., a back operation, a task which can involve the personnel in some fairly hard work. Moreover, there can be problems if a badly injured person has to be lifted on to a table while simultaneously having to be careful to move him as little as possible.

This problem has led to the development of a number of different variants of revolving and rotating operating tables. Thus, for example, from French patent No. 2 585 240 there is a known operating table’s support column with a ring-shaped element into which an operating table or bed can be introduced and where an opposite bed is permanently mounted in the ring. By securing the patient between these beds, the ring can then be turned and the patient moved into the required position. However, this device is relatively awkward to use and the ring may get in the way during the operation.

Moreover, from US patent No. 3 302 218 a further device with a rotatable ring is known in which a bed is used. The ring is in two parts with a hinged connection enabling it to be opened. hen a patient has to be turned after he has been lifted on to the bed, the ring is opened and a second bed is placed over the patient to secure him, after which the ring is turned 180°, the ring is opened and the patient can be released from the upper bed. This device is limited to one rotation of 180° and in this design too the ring will be in the way.

Surveillance, Sterilization and Disinfection of Operation Theatres in the Developing World

June 12th, 2007

SURVEILLANCE AND STERILISATION OF OPERATIon THEATRES

In the Developing World

Dr.T.V.Rao MD – Dr.Chithra.VN MD

In spite of brief stay of patients in the operation theatre (in majority of circumstances), the environment of operation theatre plays a great role in the onset and spread of infection because of a multifactor causation of infection. It is usually necessary to study the epidemiology of infection as a multidisciplinary approach. In resource poor circumstances as in most developing countries, work in isolation and few facilities to make any epidemiological surveys Many believe that routine Microbiological monitoring is most essential but in reality it is not practicable. But every hospital should pay good attention in proper maintenance of air conditioning plants, ventilator systems, and to have greater control on mechanisms and personnel involved in disinfection and sterilization of materials used in the theatres in operative procedures.

Operation theatres should be built with implementation of good civil Engineering standards.

OPERATION THEATRE – DISCIPLINE

1. Only people absolutely needed for an assigned work should be present.

2. People present in theatre should make minimal movements and curtail unnecessary movements in and out of theatres, which will greatly reduce bacterial count.

3. Air borne contamination is usually affected by type of surgery, quality of air which in fact depends on rate of air exchange.

All the persons including the least cadre of employers are partners in infection control and should be aware to comply with infection control regulations

4 Prompt disposal of Theatre waste out of the theatre is of top priority. Any spillage of Body fluids including Blood on the floors is highly hazardous and prompts the rapid multiplication of Nosocomial pathogens in particular Pseudomonas spp

SURVEILLANCE OF OPERATION THEATRE

Role of Microbiological Surveillance

The environments in the operation theatre are dynamic and subject to continuous change. Good infrastructures do not mean a safe environment as human make a greater difference in making the environment unsafe.

Microbiologists should be aware of organisms, sites and populations as surveillance cultures should be chosen carefully to allow meaningful interpretation of results.

Microbiologists should be familiar with the clinical techniques as those normally used for culturing clinical specimens may not yield correct result when applied to environmental specimens.

Sites and cultured reports should not be chosen as etiological sources in the present infections. Culturing unnecessary surface areas causes confusion and meaningful interpretation is lost.

AIR IS THE IMPORTANT SOURCE OF INFECTION

Bacterial counts in operation theatres are influenced by the number of individuals present, ventilation and air flow, the results should be interpreted taking the above facts into consideration.

Surveillance for Air borne Pathogens:

In resource poor Hospitals settle plates with blood agar are used and can detect pathogens, commensals and saprophytic bacteria. Multiple plates are kept and results are based on overall assessment rather than on a single plate study in the room. Microbiologists will clarify the acceptable counts at the different physical locations in multispeciality hospitals.

There is a sea change in analysis of bacterial counts in recent past with advances in medical technologies like Joint replacement surgeries dealing with critical patients. Slit sampler and Air centrifuge equipment for bacterial counts are replacing settle plates, the safe level of colony counts can be calculated as per the standards created with peer reviewed studies by the manufacturers.

How frequently we can do the Surveillance for Air borne Microbes.

Yet there is no definite answer to this question

Doing too frequent surveys are expensive and will not correlate the existing infection rate in the Hospital.

But can indicate the circumstance we operate which can have bearing effect if the safety standards fall

Surveillance for Clostridia spores

The age old tradition of detection of anaerobic spores of C.tetani, and Gas gangrene producing organisms are losing ground with onset of more awareness on theatre sterilization. Routine testing for the Anaerobes is not essential except when there were suspected cases of Tetanus or Gas gangrene attributed to operating in a particular Operation theatre.

But it is ideal to survey the Operation theatres for anaerobes when newly constructed or any remodeling or structural alterations are done. In such situations which will have trust worthy safety of the theatre.

STERILISATION AND DISINFECTION OF OPERATION THEATRES AND CRITICAL CARE AREAS

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

1. Keep the floor dry when in use.

2. Use only vacuum cleaners (booming to be forbidden as it will dispense the infected material all around and on the equipments.

3. Chemical disinfection of an operation room floor is probably unnecessary. The bacteria carrying particles already on the floor are unlikely to reach an open wound in sufficient numbers to cause an infection

(Ayliffe et al 1967. Hombroeus et al 1978)

Cleaning alone followed by drying will considerably reduce bacterial population.

4. Wall and Ceilings- Wall and ceiling are rarely contaminated. The numbers of bacteria do not appear to increase even if walls are not cleaned. Frequent cleaning is not necessary and has little influence on bacterial counts. Routine disinfection is therefore unnecessary, but only cleaned when dirty.

ENVIRONMENTAL CLEANING OF OPERATION THEATRES

At the Beginning of the Day

1. Only remove the dust with cloth wetted with clean water. ( Mop theatre furniture lamps, sitting tables, trolley tops, operation tables, procedure tables, Boyle’s apparatus)

Note: Need not use chemicals/disinfectants unless contaminated with blood or body fluids

Between the procedures

Clean operation tables or contaminated surfaces with disinfectant solutions.

1. In case of spillages of blood/ body fluids decontaminate with bleaching solution/ chlorine solution (10% available chlorine)

2. All discard waste in plastic bags (do not accumulate around surgical sites)

3. Do not discard soiled linen and gowns in the operation theatre floor.

At the end of the day

1. Clean all the table tops, sinks, door handles with detergent followed by low level disinfectant.

2. Clean the floors with detergents mixed with warm water.

3. Finally mop with disinfectant like phenol in the concentration of 1 in 10 (low concentrations of phenol will not serve the purpose).

4. Keep the operation theatre dry for the next day’s work

Fumigation

1. Seal the room with adhesive tapes round the edges of the doors/windows and ventilators and apertures.

2 For Each 1000 cu.ft of space place 500ml formaldehyde (40% solution) and 1000ml of water in an electric boiler. Switch on the boiler, leave the room and seal the door.

3. Seal the room for 24 hrs

4. Then open the door and neutralize any residual formaldehyde with ammonia by exposing 250ml of S.G 880 ammonia/ 1Lt of formaldehyde used. (Ref – Mackie and McCartney Practical Medical Microbiology 13th Edition)

5. Fumigation is obsolete in many developed nations in view of toxic nature of Formalin. Too frequent use and inhalation is hazardous

6 Several new safe chemicals are emerging but constrains of economy limit the use and several hours of closure of operation theatres can be curtailed with Fumigation.

THE FOLLOWING PRECAUTIONS HAVE GREATLY REDUCED THE RATES OF INFECTION

1. Every Hospital must constitute Infection control committee to monitor the events in the Hospital, on all matters related to control of Infections.

2. The entry of unnecessary personnel to be restricted into operation theatres as every one contributes to Infection.

3. A thorough washing with warm water and good detergent and carbolisation can bring overall improvement than mere fumigation.

4. Frequent monitoring and training of medical and paramedical staff must carry high priority than mere mechanical and chemical methods.

5. Thorough washing and carbolisation if done everyday after the surgeries will greatly enhance the safety standards and economize the repeated expenditure on fumigation.

TRAINING OF PARAMEDICAL STAFF/ RESIDENTS

1. The short solution to control infection lies with trained staff.

2. The principal and control of infection to all new comers and junior staff should be a goal of any good Institution.

3. Formulate guidelines update as per the changing situation in control the infection.

4. Institute should formulate ideas on infection control to the need of circumstances, as there are no fixed guidelines or formulae to control to suit all occasional.

5. Simple repeated hygienic hand wash is most cost effective method to reduce several infections in Hospitals, in particular operation theatres

Operations Support Staff

June 11th, 2007

Some businesses and business managers view Operations (the functions and people who produce revenue) as better than every one else. Some firms recognize the critical and complementary role played by those not directly involved in Operations. For most of my life, I worked in Operations, and it still influences my thinking. I always want to know the impact a decision will have on the operations and operators of the business. I make sure that our solutions at FireStarter Speaking and Consulting are focused this way.

Most of the leaders we work with are operators. Unfortunately, some of them don’t have a high opinion of non-operators, also called functional staff. This would include the departments of Accounting, Human Resources, Equipment, IT, Marketing, and Sales. There may be others; you get the idea.

In my experience, I’ve seen two types of functional staff people: administrative and operational. Let’s look at Human Resources. The administrative HR person is well-versed in the rules and regulations of the business. They understand employment law and benefits. They do what they are asked to do and may not step too far outside their box and the business can’t live without them. Operational HR workers are focused on keeping the company moving and growing. They want to improve the business, so they make decisions with an eye toward the future. Operational HR folks may show up in the field or on the shop floor at any time, working to build relationships with Operations personnel. In the short term, a business can live without them.

Operational functional staff personnel become strategic advisors to the leadership of the company or division. A good leader in Operations wouldn’t dream of making a decision without consulting his or her operational functional staff. Titles are illustrative here. For example, a VP of Human Resources compared to a Benefits Administrator. Over in Finance, we see the CFO as opposed to the controller.

Let me be clear that we need both types of functional staff for a business to be truly successful. The absence of operational staff doesn’t doom a business to failure, but it is almost a guarantee that it will not achieve all it is capable of. Those in Operations need the advice and counsel of operational staff so they can make better decisions, but they don’t always ask for it. Sometimes, they just need to be reminded to reach out to the very capable staff already on their team. But often, a functional staff member is able to offer only administrative support–not operational. This can lead operators to virtually ignore their staff. This creates a downward spiral of lower expectations of staff–which they will then live down to, thereby creating still lower expectations.

It doesn’t have to be this way. Employees at all levels and in all areas of the business benefit from continued development. Operators need to lead not only Operations, but functional staff as well. Often, staff stays in the administrative role because their superiors haven’t informed them of the opportunities they were missing. Additionally, there are conventions and meetings of associations that focus precisely on the professional career development of functional staff. (The Society of Human Resource Managers is one of the best professional associations. If your HR person hasn’t been there in a while, or does not attend at the local chapter level, why not make that happen? It can prove advantageous for both of you.)

There will always be some tension between operations and staff, but it need not be negative. And it can be harnessed and used to further the company when dedicated professionals are willing to work together. But it will cause problems when there is a mutual mistrust or dislike between the two sides. For your business to reach its optimal success, these issues must be addressed.

Smaller businesses may not be able to afford certain types of staff and support, but the roles must be addressed. External consultants can help, as can industry peer groups or inside employees who wear multiple hats. The competitive and regulatory environment of the early 21st century demands a more enlightened and sophisticated approach. Recognizing the administrative and operational needs of the business is a key part of that new approach.

Buy Operating System Software

June 10th, 2007

Scout the market and you would surely find out for yourself that a task to buy operating system software could be a really costly task. For quite some time, computer users and buyers know that when they buy operating system software, they are expected to allocate a significant amount of budget for the purchase. Because prices of the products do not go down, it is just logical for consumers to strive to find out why such trends are never reversed.

To begin with, an operating system is software itself, a computer program that facilitates the management of computer resources. The OS is providing programmers with a useful and effective interface that is used to access and use the resources integrated in the computer. The operating system works by managing and allocating internal system resources and tasks. In other words, no computer application can ever be accessed and run without the use of an operating system. Thus, there is always a need to buy operating system software.

Setback

Of course, it is already a well-known fact that the price tag is one specific and unique setback that prevents people from easily and widely buying an operating system. If you are to buy operating system software, you should prepare a huge amount of money as such programs are not usually rolled out in the market at affordable and reasonable prices.
