Welcome to the series of blogs on Design Patterns. This is introductory blog on design pattern. In this blog I will try to explain definition of design pattern & will try to walkthrough of 3 main categories of design pattern.

Design patterns are tried and tested programs for recurring problems in software programming. These patterns are documented from experience gain from IT industry.

Design patterns are documented best practices for software architecture.

Design pattern is not silver bullet. Many times we have questions that how can we implement design patterns in the project.

My answer to the question is â “You know your project well. Every project is different. Issues are different. Way of approach is different. So take up the design pattern as reference, look into your project problem and try to solve using design pattern.

Understand important fact that “Patterns are for project, project is not for pattern”.
I have seen many times developers are trying to force design patterns in project & it completely masses up the software architecture.

Design patterns are in existence from the long time back.

Even in college time, when it was asked to build sorting algorithm the first answer is “Bubble Sort” pattern. Even though Bubble Sort is there, many times you should use your own algorithm because you know the problem well so don’t try to fit bubble sort if it is not matching your sorting requirement & use your customize algorithm to simplify the project.

Design patterns are mainly classified in 3 categories.

1. Creational Patterns
2. Structural Patterns
3. Behavioral Patterns

Creational Patterns

When we look at software architecture, one of the big issues in the software architecture is:

How do we control the object creation?
How do we centralize object creation?
Let us say you have 100 of classes in your project & you client code starts creating object. E.g. Inventory object, Account Object, Order Object.

Client code is creating, closing & destroying the objects. In such events,
1. Client code becomes very complicated.
2. Client code is very much heavily tied up with main concrete objects

This leads to heavy coupling with client code & main concrete objects. In order to solve this problem we have creation pattern.

In Creation pattern, we centralize or delegate object creation in different class & this class will be used by client code to get objects.

Structural Patterns
A second big issue in the software architecture is to manage structural changes. E.g. We have Employee class & Phones Class. One employee can have multiple phones. Phone class is aggregated inside the Employee class.

This is the working structure of your project & suddenly your client sends a request saying that Phone & Employee should be independent entity. Here you want to make a structure change but you also want to see that it does affect throughout the project. Here the structure Patterns will come in to the picture.

Behavioral Patterns
Sometimes you want to change behavior of class and make sure that it will not affect the project.

E.g. we have Product class and when you place order we are checking validity period of product and it is 20 days. Now we need to change the behavior of the class and say that it is now 2 months. There is change in behavior of the class but we have to ensure that it does not affect project a lot. It just changes exact place where we need to change or exact entity which we need to change.

All software architecture design issues in line with these three categories. All 3 categories are addressed in design pattern by approx. 40 design patterns.

In coming article we will go through each design pattern and will try to understand each one of them in detail.

Software developers and architects come across lots of frequently occurring problems in their work with regards to the practical applicability of web services. All of them employ certain design approaches to address these problems so that they can continue using web services in order to enhance their work output. There are indeed certain design challenges associated with using web services but the problems can easily be handled if a software developer has the necessary knowledge. Knowledge of service design patterns is therefore absolutely essential to these software architects so that they can use web services correctly, especially if they intend to use SOAP/WSDL or alternatively, the REST architectural style.

There are a few web service design solutions that all experienced developers and architects have to know about. This knowledge helps them to use them correctly in the best possible situation, ensuring that the final product is exactly what the client is paying for. The problem is that many people hesitate from using them even though they are essential to the success of the web services that these people help create.

One of the most important questions that needs to be answered while creating web services is how it will enable clients and services to communicate with each other in the best manner possible. The objective should be to enable conversations between multiple parties that should also be sustained over extended periods of time. The different parties need to be able to exchange data effectively for the service to be a success. The service should also be versioned easily.

The other important question that needs to be addressed is whether there is anything in the system that is causing the client to become less coupled to it. My developers also realize that certain changes they make to a service are not successful because they cause a client to break with that particular service. It is important to have a thorough understanding of these services so that this problem can be avoided altogether.

Web service developers need to understand how service logic is implemented in the correct and simplest manner. They should have a clear understanding of the situations in which certain approaches are best used. They also need to know all about the different generic functions that a web service should have. These include authentication, validation, caching, and logging. If this is not done well then there is a high possibility that the service will not function properly or in the manner in which it is intended to. We service design developers and architects also need to know how to create services that can support changes and growth in business logic, which is inevitable, in a manner that does not compel clients to keep upgrading the software they are using.

These questions will only be answered if the web service developers are very familiar with different service design patterns. There are many resources they can use in order to get the knowledge they need and these resources should be utilized at the earliest.

New User Interface Design Patterns in App Design

Inspired by the Smashing Magazine blog post.

Apple has long been a trendsetter in setting user interface patterns. Considering that they popularized graphical user interfaces this is hardly surprising. From the beginning Apple has been pro-active in setting user interface design guidelines for UI designers. However the tables seem to be turning somewhat as user interface design innovations from third-party developers become adopted by other user interface designers. Normally Apple would introduce a new user interface design paradigm, such as “Aqua” when they released the first iteration of Mac OS X. Thankfully for UI designers Apple would eat their own dog food by incorporating their new user interface design standards first thus setting the tone. This is one of the major reasons why many Mac apps had (and still do) a consistent look and feel. A great example of this is Apple’s own iLife suite of apps in general and iPhoto in particular.

How did iPhoto set a user interface design standard on the Mac?

iPhoto’s user interface design has been adopted by a number of Mac applications with an image gallery, such as LittleSnapper and Flickery. Both share a gray left sidebar used for navigation complete with similar color-coding for the various buttons. Sadly this color-coding was removed from the user interface design of iTunes in favor of a completely grayscale look. It remains to be seen whether Apple plans to roll out this UI design to the other iLife apps. Other user interface design similarities include a slider at the bottom right of the UI design to change the size of images in the image gallery pane. The user interface design of Apple apps have always served as UI design suggestions, which were in turn adopted by others. In the particular case of iTunes’ grayscale interface design I hope this doesn’t happen as it lowers usability where the navigation buttons are concerned.

How have third-party user interface designers began to set UI design patterns on the Mac?

Occasionally there has always been a third party applications featuring a user interface design that would go on to set UI design standards. Examples include Transmit and Quicksilver’s influence on the user interface design of FTP clients and launchers respectively. A more recent example of a third party app setting user interface design standards is the Tweetie app. The Twitter client app would prove so popular that other non-Twitter apps would pay the sincerest form of flattery by imitating its UI design. Twitter itself would go on to buy it and make it the official Twitter Mac and iOS client. Examples of non-Twitter clients that would adopt Tweetie’s user interface design are the Sparrow e-mail client and the Reeder RSS client. Reeder would also set some user interface design standards of its own among RSS clients because, incidentally, the Tweetie-like UI design was added later as a mini-view.

What could be some of the reasons why third party user interface designers and developers are able to set UI design standards?

A lot of the third party apps that are setting UI design standards tend to either be Mac or iOS apps. Their influence is closely tied to the iPhone and the revolutionary App Store. With the introduction of the Mac App Store there is an increasing trend in Mac apps that are following the user interface design of the aforementioned Tweetie and Reeder. This is even more the case with apps that incorporate UI design settings of the new Mac OS X “Lion”. There is, however, a very contentious issue regarding user interface standards set by third party developers and that is intellectual property. Apple purposefully wants developers to adopt their user interface design standards but third party developers (fanboys rather) might not take too kindly to someone copying their UI designs. However if every single app had its own unique user interface design usability would suffer. Thankfully the creators of Tweetie and Reeder seem to be content on creating better user interface designs though I fear that the day might come when litigation is brought forward by a third party developer.

We all have interests in life, from music to painting – there’s an artist in all of us. Out of that a large chunk are to busy or inhibited to find time for such activities while a small group are able to fulfill their passion. An artist usually converts his hobbies into full time activity.

There is evidence to prove that embroidery was prevalent during Stone Age, they used strips of leather and bone needles. Today the range is vast from fabrics and threads to design patterns to select from.

Embroidery can be a leisurely hobby. Embroidery allows us to make animal prints, make sceneries and small but wonderful craft items. That’s not all we can make prints on hand towels that we use daily or create some cartoon like pictures on the tablemats we use. I can go on and on about the use of embroidery.

MVC Design Pattern

Model-view-controller

Model-view-controller (MVC) is an architectural pattern used in software engineering. In complex computer applications that present a large amount of data to the user, a developer often wishes to separate data (model) and user interface (View) concerns, so that changes to the user interface will not affect data handling, and that the data can be reorganized without changing the user interface. The model-view-controller solves this problem by decoupling data access and business logic from data presentation and user interaction, by introducing an intermediate component: the controller.

Pattern description

It is common to split an application into separate layers: presentation (UI), domain, and data access. In MVC the presentation layer is further separated into view and controller. MVC encompasses more of the architecture of an application than is typical for a design pattern.

Model
The domain-specific representation of the information on which the application operates. It is a common misconception that the model is another name for the domain layer. Domain logic adds meaning to raw data (e.g., calculating if today is the user’s birthday, or the totals, taxes and shipping charges for shopping cart items).
Many applications use a persistent storage mechanism (such as a database) to store data. MVC does not specifically mention the data access layer because it is understood to be underneath or encapsulated by the Model.
View
Renders the model into a form suitable for interaction, typically a user interface element.
Controller
Processes and responds to events, typically user actions, and may invoke changes on the model.

MVC is often seen in web applications, where the view is the actual HTML page, and the controller is the code which gathers dynamic data and generates the content within the HTML. Finally the model is represented by the actual content, usually stored in a database or XML files.

Though MVC comes in different flavors, control flow generally works as follows:

1. The user interacts with the user interface in some way (e.g., user presses a button)
2. A controller handles the input event from the user interface, often via a registered handler or callback.
3. The controller accesses the model, possibly updating it in a way appropriate to the user’s action (e.g., controller updates user’s shopping cart).
4. A view uses the model to generate an appropriate user interface (e.g., view produces a screen listing the shopping cart contents). The view gets its own data from the model. The model has no direct knowledge of the view.
5. The user interface waits for further user interactions, which begins the cycle anew.

What is the Singleton Design Pattern?

A group of authors now affectionately known as the ‘Gang of Four’ (Erich Gamma, Richard Helm, Ralph Johnson, and John Vilssides) wrote a book called ‘Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software’. In this book they defined three categories of design patterns which are:

Creational Patterns Structural Patterns Behavioural Patterns

The Singleton Design pattern falls into the category of Creational Design Patterns, the Singleton Design Pattern ensures your software has only one instance of the class and provides a global access to it. In other words the Singleton design pattern is all about making sure that you can instantiate only one object of a particular class. If you don’t use a pattern like this one, the new operator just keeps on creating more and more objects.

Could I not just use a Static Class

Technically you could just use a static class as then there would only be one shared instance of a class for. However, if you did that then you would miss out on some of the benefits of the singleton design pattern. These benefits that singletons have over static classes include:

Singletons can implement interfaces and inherit from other classes A singletons can be lazy loaded. Only when it is actually needed. That’s very handy if the initialisation includes expensive resource loading or database connections Singeltons offer an actual object Singletons can be extended into a software factory. The object management behind the scenes is abstract so it’s better maintainable and results in better code Static classes are instantiated at runtime. This could be time consuming. Singletons can be instantiated only when needed So how do you use the Singleton Design Pattern?

In object oriented programming and software development you generally create an instance of an object by using a new operator, for example:

C#: MyObject myNewInstance = new MyObject()
VB.NET: Dim myNewInstance As New MyObject()

Each time a new object the computer allocates a heap of memory, creating lots of these object will increase the amount of memory is used and potentially effect the performance of your software product.

So how do we make it so that we only ever have one instance of our class, well it is a very simple 2 stage process:

Create the objects contructor as PRIVATE , that way no code outside of the class can creat an instance of the object. Create a static/shared method within the class that will return a newly created instance of your class, or if an instance already exists then it will return the current instance. Singleton Design Pattern Example

C#:

public class MyObject
{
//create a private static variale to store our instance
private static MyObject singletonObject;

       //create a private constructor
       private MyObject()
      {
             //initial
       }

       //create a publi static method to return the instance
       public static MyObject CreateInstance()
       {
              //check if we already have an instance, if so return it, else create a new
              //instance

if (singletonObject == null)
singletonObject = new MyObject();

return singletonObject;
}
}

VB.NET :

Public Class MyObject

‘create a private static variale to store our instance
Private Shared singletonObject As MyObject

       ‘create a private constructor
       Private Sub New()

             ‘initialise the object
       End Sub

       ‘create a public static method to return the instance
       Public Shared Function CreateInstance() As MyObject

              ‘check if we already have an instance, if so return it, else create a new
              ‘instance

              If singletonObject Is Nothing Then
                         singletonObject = new MyObject()
              End If

Return singletonObject
End Function
End Class

Notice how in the implementation of the singleton design pattern we declare a private static variable to store the instance of our class. When we call the function we have created to create our instance a check is performed to see if an instance exists in that variable, if not one is created and returned.
