New Kid on the Block: CSS3

November 9th, 2009

Cascading style sheets (CSS) have long been hailed as the Web’s bridge to the promised land of separation of content and presentation.  But while we Web developers have happily kicked our table-based layouts (mostly) to the curb in favor of much more manageable elements marked up with CSS styles, things are still far from perfect.  Much of this has to do with intractable browser compatibility issues, but that aside, a lot could be solved by upgrading CSS to address the things we’ve learned over the years.

In steps CSS3 …

The newest family member to the style sheet family is CSS3. With the possibility of new and exciting things when it comes to designing and how you design, things look hopeful on the horizon. Word on the street is that with CSS3, you can create more diverse styles sheets for large variety of occasions and much much more.  All of this information can be found at css3.info more in depth and detail.

If you don’t want to wade through all the details, here’s a summary for Web developers and Web users broken down into website parts:

Borders

border-color: in Firefox there is now an option for a fading gray border, a very common effect that is now achieved in somewhat kludgy ways. border-image: this feature can define an image to be used instead of the normal border of an element. This feature is actually split up into a couple of properties: border-image and border-corner-image. border-radius: a new feature in CSS3, which allows you to create round corners on box-items (very sexy stuff … if you’re using Firefox or Safari, a page that helps you roll your own “themes” on the site of our favorite Javascript library, jQuery). box-shadow: another new feature in CSS3, gives you the option of setting up a shadow on a box-item and varying the options … once again, a very common activity that is currently done in unsettlingly dirty ways.

Backgrounds

background-origin/background-clip: this property is going to be used to calculate background-position of a background in a certain box. A feature in this property is used to determine whether the backgrounds extends into the border or not. background-size: You can specify this size in pixels, width and height, or in percentages of a background. multiple backgrounds: this snazzy new feature allows the implementation of multiple backgrounds on one element.

The Computer gaming revolution is here to stay

November 9th, 2009

The video game revolution is very real. Believe me I know because I have lived it and I have seen it in action. My son is a video game fanatic he plays all the time and will not take a break to eat sleep , or go outside unless I force him to. There is something about video games that we simply love. My son once described it as a cartoon where you get to be the main character and who does not love cartoons. But there has to be something a bit more to the full video game thing than just it being a game because people simply take this thing way too seriously not to mention that the amount of money that is spent on video games numbers in the billions every year.

The video gaming industry is probably the largest and most profitable of all the entertainment industries in the world. However what is most unique about video games is that it is not just an American phenomenon. The games appeal to kids and young adults as well as fully grown people across all cultures. Video games are popular in the United States and Canada and Japan. Wherever there is a somewhat industrialized and technological society you will see video games in abundance.

There was an estimate that in the next ten years there will be a different video game for every person on the planet. This number is sure to be surpassed as video games no longer need to be made on some sort of removable media for a particular platform. now a video game by can be played by anyone with a computer and a high speed Internet connection. Many of the video games that are produced on computers are known as flash.

Flash games are usually shorter and simpler than the type of games that are produced for various video game consoles. There are increasingly complex types of flash games that are known as Internet based games. These Internet based games work on the same principle as flash games however they offer greater depth than traditional flash games. They are typically less violent, and are more likely to be approved with less restrictions than those that are produced for platforms. This is a good thing since parents have less control over when and where their children can play with based video games. Kids do not need access to a particular platform or even a particular game. All they need is a computer and they are playing video games.

Find free and fun gaming at path of the jedi gamer also check out other pc based games like Path of the Jedi Masters as well as a few others .

Computer Game Tester Jobs – Play for Pay

November 6th, 2009

The primary task undertaken by a professional game tester is the repeated organized testing of video games to discover, identify, and report bugs in the game to enable game programmers to correct the code causing those bugs. The work is repetitive, sometimes tedious. The game is played over and over again, often the repeated playing of one small game event using different tactics and strategies in an attempt to reveal an error. The game tester’s mission is to ensure that all bugs are found before game release, by him rather than after release by the customer.

The average week for a game tester is about 35 hours, although overtime can be significant during the crunch time immediately before the scheduled release date. Evening, weekend, and holiday work schedules are not unheard of. Most game testing is conducted onsite at the game company’s offices.

Experience is important in determining a game tester’s salary, but it’s not necessary to have any previous experience testing games to get your first job as a game tester. It’s important only that you enjoy playing video games and can do so for the purpose of revealing bugs and documenting the conditions under which they appear.

Game testers come from varied backgrounds, education, and degree of game playing experience. Some are artists or graphic designers who are using the game testing opportunities to establish credibility within the gaming company in the hopes of moving into character creation or game programming positions in the future. Regardless of their backgrounds, they all share some common characteristics: excellent oral and written communications skills, persistence and a willingness to play games repeatedly for long periods, a methodical and analytical approach to testing, ability to pay attention to detail, and a love for playing video games.

There is a need by all gaming companies to find good candidates for testing their games to ensure that only well tested, trouble-free products go out on the market. Nothing could damage a company’s reputation more than having to recall a game that simply does not work correctly. For many gamers with the right attitude, it can be a dream job, an opening into a career helping to develop video games. Imagine being able to earn a good income by playing video games, something you’ve been doing for years for nothing.

A word of warning, however, is required. Don’t let your enthusiasm for entering the industry blind to the fact that there are a number of scam artists out there, especially on the Internet, who are trying to make a fast buck by exploiting your interest for a game testing position. If any offer requires you to pay money up front for helping you secure game testing employment-walk away. It’s a scam. Video game companies that are looking for game testers will advertise in newspapers, industry journals, or on their company websites.

If you are wanting to become a video game tester then I highly recommend you check out Game Testing Ground, you can earn up to $150 A Day!

Computer Games For Children To Play

November 3rd, 2009

There are a multitude of action games for your child to play. If they are between the age of 3 to 5 here are some suggestions in the order or popularity. They are Hot Dog Bush, Greedy’s Bakery, Sling Shot Santa or Wonderball. Each of these games is very different, but all take eye and hand coordination.

Hot Dog Bush is the favorite game of choice and is the easiest. With this game the object is to make as many hotdogs and serve them to your waiting customers as you possibly can. You must wait until a customer is asking for a hotdog, the customer doesn’t speak of course, you just see a picture of what all they want on their hotdogs. You get the bun, place it on the counter, cook the wiener and place it in the bun. If the customer wants ketchup or any other condiment, you place that on the hotdog and give to the customer. The customer then pays you and more customers will come up. If you do not put your money in the cash register, then no more customers will approach the hotdog stand. You are required to make so much money per day. If you meet the quota, then you have won the day!

Greedy’s Bakery is based on the Smurfs! It is an adorable game of catch the food with all the graphics that the old Smurf cartoons had in them. Greedy is trying to catch all of the food that two other Smurfs are throwing to him. To help Greedy catch the food, you must move Greedy with the arrow keys. You lose a life each time that Greedy misses the food. You win a life when Greedy catches the food. As soon as the food hits Greedy’s plate, it disappears and the score goes up! You only have four lives. This game does not last long, so a child with a short attention span will enjoy this game.

Sling Shot Santa is a more difficult game. There are two elves that are pushing a slingshot on the snow. Using the arrow keys to push Santa, they speed up as long as you are pressing the keys. If you want to sling shot Santa, then you must press the space bar key. Santa will either do one of three things. If you have chosen to sling shot him at the right time, he will be shot over the ravine. If you fall short of the mark, or if you do not get going fast enough, then poor Santa lands on the ice face first! If you get to going too fast and are too close to the ravine, then Santa and the elves fall through to the hard ground below. This game takes more thinking skill than younger kids have. Trying to get Santa over the ravine was even hard for me (and I am an adult). Sometimes I think you just get lucky and Santa flies over! You don’t actually see Santa hit the ground – that was the saving grace of this game.

Wonderball is another game for children with short attention spans. Again using your arrow keys and your space bar, a small robot tries to throw a ball up at some bricks to knock them out. A little on the destructive side, but it is cute when the ball bounces back, hits the ground and then is able to knock some more bricks out! A fast paced game which also requires hand and eye coordination!

Best CMS Applications For SEO

November 1st, 2009

Looking for the “Perfect” CMS for you SEO campaign? Well according to many professionals, particularly with numerous SEO Philippines consultants that had their hands on some of the many CMS’ out in the market, there really isn’t a “perfect” CMS that could used for SEO. Almost all CMS softwares has their advantages and disadvantages pertaining to its use in SEO. The only basis that describe’s a CMS’ capabilities in terms of SEO or with any other uses are its user-friendly features. Although almost all CMS applications can be used for SEO, many still agree on several CMS applications because of its ease in use as well as with its built-in or add-on features primarily use in SEO. Popular names in the CMS market today include the popular Joomla! CMS, MODx, SilverStripe, and Drupal, and WordPress. Joomla! Many have agreed of Joomla!’s uses in SEO is the best by far. It was a re-branded release of Mambo 4.5.2.3 which, itself, was combined with other bug and moderate-level security fixes. Part of what made Joomla! very popular in the market, not only for SEO but in almost all web management purposes, is its third party program extensions called “Plugins” (Previously known as “Mambots” in Mambo). Plugins, like those found in Mozilla Firefox, are background extensions that extend Joomla! with new functionality. One example is the WikiBot which allows the author of Joomla! content to use “Wikitags” in Joomla! articles which will auto-create dynamic hyperlinks to Wikipedia articles when displayed. There are over 3,000 extensions for Joomla! available via the Extensions Directory. One popular Plugin used specifically for SEO is JoomSEF. ARTIO JoomSEF is a SEO component for Joomla! Content Management System that rewrites URLs to be Search Engine Friendly (SEF) and to be human easily understandable. It works with multilingual sites by integrating JoomFish component support. It also nables users full customization of wide-range of meta tags for any URL of the website and works with both Apache HTTP Server and IIS. Popular features of JoomSEF used for SEO inludes:

Rewriting of original Joomla! URLs to be Search Engine Friendly and human understandable. Providing support for multilingual sites using JoomFish. Providing URLs internationalization. Providing wide range of editable meta tags for any URL in your Joomla! Providing fully customizable URLs. Providing customizable 404 page. Helps in handling 301 redirects. MODx MODx is another popular CMS used by many SEO Philippines consultants. One feature that made it popular is its complete control of all metadata and URL structure for Search Engine Optimization (SEO) purposes, all of it found in the application. Other than its SEO capabilities, MODx also became popular because of its other features. This includes: Cross-browser flexibility including Firefox, Safari and Internet Explorer on Windows, Firefox and Safari in Mac OS X, and Firefox in Linux. Works well even on modest shared servers. Supports any Ajax library including jQuery, MooTools, ExtJS and Prototype. Object-oriented core code. Ability to customize the Manager on a per-deployment basis. MODx were also known for its several awards and recognitions. In July 2007, MODx was awarded Packt Publishing’s Most Promising Open Source Content Management System award. On February 6, 2009, OpenSourceCMS.com user rankings placed MODx version 0.9.6.3 as the 3rd highest ranked of 78 applications in the CMS/portal category with 2885 votes. SilverStripe Although not as popularly used compared to Joomla!, some have agreed that SilverStripe can be as useful as Joomla! in SEO, particularly because of its Search engine friendly URLs, meta-data management, and XML sitemap generation. According to many professionals, SilverStripe’s popularity in SEO was mainly fueled by its user-friendly features. Features of SilverStripe include: A modern, extensible web-application interface. Drag and drop tree-based navigation structure. Work-flow management: Draft/Published separation through content staging, document revision control/rollback with ‘compare’ functionality. Highly configurable security/permissions model. Optimizations for heavy loads (e.g. manual cache refresh). Drupal A very popular CMS used for web design, Drupal was also used in SEO. Similar to Joomla!, Drupal also allows third-party contributed (often abbreviated to “contrib”) modules and themes to extend or override Drupal’s default behaviors without changing Drupal core’s code. However, current versions of contribs doesn’t support any special SEO functions. According to several Web design Philippines consultants, many are still using the CMS for SEO purposes.
One popular feature of the Drupal is that i can run on any computing platform that supports both a web server capable of running PHP version 4.3.5+ (including Apache, IIS, Lighttpd, and nginx) and a database (such as MySQL or PostgreSQL) to store content and settings. The disadvantage, however, is that Drupal is a bit complicated compared to other CMS applications. For more information visit to our site at http://www.myoptimind.com
