People have always debated on which gaming consoles are able to offer the better quality and performance: computers or consoles like Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii and the others. Today, a lot of gamers say that console systems fare a lot better because of the plug and play concept and the overall ease of use. Now, if you are contemplating on which one to buy and use, here are a couple of the advantages and disadvantages of computer and console gaming systems.

The first aspect would be in the game installation. A good thing about the Xbox, Nintendo and Sony console systems is that it can just be simply plugged and then played on. You need not worry about waiting for a long time just to install a small 5-gigabyte video game on your hard drive with possible compatibility issues. This would be where console systems would have the edge over computer gaming systems.

Next would be the quality of the effects and graphics. A lot of people say that the graphics of computer games are still far better than those of console systems like PlayStation and Xbox. This is because the graphics cards of computers such as ATI and GeForce have large video RAMs that allow games to have much sharper images that run a lot faster.

The third one would be the overall performance of the video games. You probably already know that the game’s performance is directly affected by your computer’s quality. When we talk about the quality of the computer, this would mean the amount of RAM, the size of the hard drive, CPU, the video card and the drivers. Obviously, the better your computer’s specifications are, the better your game would be. However, computer games are more prone to viruses as well as missing and corrupted files and slow speed because of a cluttered hard drive. This would be where console systems are better as they rarely have performance issues.

As for the game availability, computer systems seem to have the edge, as not all PC games are available in other console systems.

What is a Website Programmer? Answer. Someone who has taken at least two years to learn and experience the art of writing web pages by hand, in the HTML programming langauge. And even this would not qualify you as a website programmer really. A “Proper” website programmer is someone who can programme, by hand, in HTML (HyperText Markup Langauge), CSS (Cascading Style Sheets), PHP (Personal Home Page and then PHP Hypertext Preprocessor), JavaScript, MySQL and other programming/scripting languages. So what has this got to do with Web Browsers? Well. If you are not a website programmer and you (or someone you have hired) are using a HTML Software Package such as Dreamweaver to create your web pages; You should be aware of the following:

LAYOUT  ENGINES

A Layout Engine is basically the core coding of a web browser that dictates how it should format (i.e. display, position and style) Text, Images, Tables, Paragraphs, Embed Audio/Video and so on. Although the website programmer has some control of this formatting via HTML and CSS instructions, at the end of the day web browsers have their own unique way of interpreting the website programmer’s instructions. For example. If a website programmer creates a questionnaire form made up of standard elements (i.e. drop-down menus, edit boxes and check (tick) boxes) most, if not all, web browsers should display those elements perfectly – In the correct positions, just as specified by the programmer. However. If the programmer decides to use a scripting language such as JavaScript or JQuery to create the same questionnaire form things may go wrong; Simply because the standard code would be understood by all web browsers whereas the JavaScript or JQuery code might not be understood by all web browsers. This could mean the elements are not positioned properly and/or are displayed too big or small for example. These errors (bugs) can be caused by the programmer’s code, the web browser’s layout engine, the scripting language or all three.

THE  PROGRAMMER

Many programmers believe that because certain web browsers use a certain Layout Engine they do not need to download/install/use the other web browsers that use the same layout engine. For example. Firefox and Flock use the same layout engine, called Gecko, which means they should both display a web page the same because they are both following the Gecko layout/formatting rules. So a web page’s text and images for example should be in the same position regardless if that web page is displayed with Firefox or Flock. So why download Flock for example when you can test your web page with Firefox only? The answer is because nothing ever runs that smoothly – No one follows all of the rules all of the time.

WEB  BROWSER  PROBLEMS

Internet Explorer 8 for example uses a different layout engine, called Trident, so it will display a web page differently to a Gecko web browser. Internet Explorer 6 does not display/support .png files in terms of transparent images (they are displayed as grey pixels instead of see-through pixels). Firefox does not display .wmv video files by default (you need to install a separate piece of software called an Add-On). Some web browsers are naturally cluttered up with Toolbars which means a web page might look perfect on a uncluttered web browser but look awful, and need scrolling, when toolbars are cluttering.

Popularity. One reason to download/install the web browser called Maxthon is because it is China based and has been downloaded more than 218 Million times (at the time of writing). If your web pages are not displaying properly in Maxthon can you afford to lose 218 Million potential, buying, visitors?

CONCLUSION

With the above said, I would strongly recommend you download and install all web browsers. That way you can see exactly how a web page is displayed in a certain web browser. And always keep each web browser up-to-date by either using its CHECK FOR UPDATES feature or by checking its website for update files. The same applies to updating your scripting languages. Check their websites regularly for update files.

The problem of low back and neck pain in teenagers is likely to increase significantly in years to come,

This seems on the cards considering the associated health problems of obesity, reduced levels of activity, and the popularity of passive entertainment systems such as play stations that encourage further inactivity and prolonged sitting posture in the adolescent age group.

Terry O’Brien of Back Trouble UK says “While 80 percent of the population are likely to experience low back pain at some stage in their life, there is a worrying trend in the amount of back pain experienced by teenagers.

It is well founded that having another family member with a history of back pain means you are more likely to develop back pain as an adolescent. As does poor family functioning and increased life stress.

Higher levels of stress, anxiety and depression are also associated with adolescent back pain.

Back pain is commonly provoked by sporting activity and static postures such as sitting. It is also known that specific sporting groups such as rowers are at higher risk of back pain.

Children seem to fall into two broad groups, those doing very little activity and those doing too much. Both groups are prone to back pain.However it is the worrying trend of inactivity amongst adolescents that is the greatest cause for concern. Fuelled by the dramatic increase in computer games and multi-media consoles.”

Let us now look at Bio-Mechanics.

Bio-mechanics and its association to Back Pain.

When our body is in the standing position it is in a state of unsteady equilibrium because the base is small and the centre of gravity is a long way above it. That is why it has to be balanced by keeping the centre of gravity over the base, otherwise the body would fall over.

Equilibrium: The steadiness of the body depends on the size of its base and the distance of the centre of gravity from that base. An object having a large base and a low centre of gravity is not easily upset.

The first thing necessary in order to accomplish good posture is to straighten the neck, keep the chin down and back. The second important thing is correct deep breathing.

The line of gravity in the fundamental standing position falls in front of the ears, and in front of the cervical and dorsal vertebrae, through the lumbar vertebrae, through the hip joint, and slightly in front of the ankle joint. But this probably varies in individuals according to their build and height.

Poor Posture associated by the following:

Genetic disorders, Familial association, Irregular/no exercise, Bad habits when sitting or standing, Carrying excess loads, (School/shopping) Underweight/Overweight (Inadequate diet)

Mental Attitude towards oneself.

Biomechanics is our way of describing how each bit of your body moves in relation to another bit.

Our bodies are fantastic at compensating when things are not quite perfect but unfortunately when we run out of compensations we usually end up with pain and stiffness.

Let’s have a look at some of the more common biomechanical problems:

Problem 1.

It’s the fashion not to tie trainers and shoes up but this prevents the shoe from supporting the inside of the foot and allows the foot to roll or ‘pronate’ too much in standing and walking.

This means the knee and the hip rolls inwards too much which makes the inside calf and inside thigh muscle shorter. The iliotibial band can then rub against the outside knee giving pain.

Further up, the bottom muscles become too long and stop working as they should do which puts added stress on the pelvis and low back joints. Before you know it you have back pain, knee pain and ankle pain! And all because of fashion!

Problem 2.

Whether you drive 5 miles or 500 miles a day your car seat is really important. In many cars the base of the seat slopes backwards. In fact some of the more expensive cars are the worst because they want you to feel ‘snug’ and safe in the seat. However, this position forces your pelvis to sit too far backwards.

Once this happens your low back and upper back flex forward too much but then your neck muscles have to work really hard to stop your head from flexing too much and allow you to see where you are going. This position then forces your shoulder blades to stretch too far forwards and a large stress is placed on both the front and the back of the shoulder.

The result is neck pain and /or upper or low back pain. This position can exacerbate sciatica as it is a big stretch for the nerves.

The solution is to raise the back of the seat so it becomes more horizontal. Some cars allow you to alter this angle but if yours does not then sit on a small cushion or buy a special wedge shape cushion that fits into the seat.

The introduction of computer games has changed that early fact significantly. Computer games have added a fresh dimension to the way in which both children and adults play either individually or collectively.

In addition computer games such as World of Warcraft Gold (WOW Gold), Guild Wars, Final Fantasy and Dungeons and Dragons have also broadened the perspective of players by introducing them to a scenario whereby resources, supplies and a variety of strengths and weaknesses of available manpower and weapons perform to create a strategic environment in which the skill and mastery of strategic thinking becomes necessary in order to win.

War has always been one of the most popular games played by children and no self-respecting male adult will likely have grown into adulthood without possessing a few fond memories of his toys soldiers. Computer games have added the dimension that was always missing with toy soldiers by bringing to life the characters that once required human imagination to conjure with. Computer games also provide realistic landscapes, strategic maps and an assortment of weaponry that begins with a club and continues into a future that can only be speculated. Coincidentally that speculation is the result of the imagination of an inventor who themselves probably have fond memories of toy soldiers and who simply wanted to go one step further and provided the virtual reality in which to do so.

Today strategic or role playing computer games are a dominant feature found inside every computer games store. Importantly computer games have come of age in that they are no longer played on a one to one basis i.e. human player versus computer. Today we have the Massively Multi-Player Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG) which allows for a large number of players to interact on a virtual world.

The most popular MMORPG computer game on the planet is possibly not the one most people automatically expect – WOW Gold is certainly hugely successful with around 8 million players world-wide while Everquest a 3D fantasy game attracts around half a million players. It would be remiss not to mention the long time favourite Dungeons and Dragons which has attracted more than 20 million players world-wide and is recognized in the industry as the game that triggered the mushroom of strategy games that now surrounds us.

However the most played game on the planet is none of these. In 1998 a game called Lineage entered the market and since then has attracted in excess of 30 million players world-wide. Lineage originates from South Korea and is a medieval fantasy strategy based game that utilizes elves, knights, wizards and prince/princess characters. As an MMORPG – Lineage has proved very successful and its development into Lineage II has progressed with new updates and expansion packs every six months. Lineage II was introduced into the United States in 2004 and by December of that year the “Chronicle II: Age of Splendour” update/expansion pack arrived. By September 2006 “Chronicle 5: Oath of Blood” was being marketed. However the next update is being marketed under a new banner as “Lineage II – The Chaotic Throne” and is referred to as Interlude.
