Web Firms Should Use Appcelerator’s Titanium Mobile

July 16th, 2009

Web Programmer To Iphone Developer

At Cloudmanic Labs we have been playing around with iPhone development since the release of the Apple SDK. We all have many years of programing experience, computer science degrees, and an overall love of programing. However, our love is in scripting languages such as php or javascript. Objective-C is just not a fun language to program. We are web dudes!!! Overall, our conclusion was we are not going to write Objective-C code that we would be proud of and at the same time continue to maintain our web programing skill sets.

Don’t Feel Like Becoming An iPhone Doob

With the boom of the iPhone we saw a lot of web development firms drop everything and start programing iPhones. While we don’t blame them, the money is good, I think many of them made the switch way to quickly. We are seeing way too many poorly written iPhone apps and you can tell they were written by someone with a web programing background not an Objective-C background. We saw this issue early on and did not want that to be us, a company that jumped on the bandwagon way to quickly. So we started to looking at subcontractors to partner with to write our iPhone applications. At this point we have worked with a few and have not been very happy. All our applications interact with our web services. We need to hire a team that understands both sides. While we are sure there are many subcontractors out there that fit the bill, of the subcontractors we have hired there was a strong understanding of one side or the other (Objective-C Vs. Web Services). Frustrated, we started looking around for a solution that would allow us to deliver a rich and powerful iPhone app that interacted with our web services, without us losing our core knowledge base of web programming. We recently found a solution that we are really excited about…….

Drum Roll Please…….Appcelerator’s Titanium Mobile

A well funded start-up called Appcelerator has a product named Titanium Mobile. Titanium Mobile allows you to write mostly native iPhone applications using javascript libraries that any decent web programmer is already an expert at, such as jQuery. The good folks at Appcelerator have created a javascript API to create native iPhone UI elements like table views, buttons, switches, sliders, and more. They also provide a javascript API to interaction with the hardware such as; camera, gps, touch screen and more. With this framework you can develop rich and powerful iPhone applications that can be submitted to the Apple App Store only using javascript/css/html. We have rewritten some of our Objective-C applications using Titanium and the development process was twice as fast. It was faster for two reasons. One, we know javascript way better then Objective-C. Two, programing in Javascript is way faster then Objective-C anyway. Titanium Mobile is not for everyone. If we were writing a game or something I would not use Titanium. Titanium, in its current form, really nails down allowing a web app developer to create a mobile extension of their web application. If you are not doing anything ground breaking on the iPhone just building an application with normal native SDK controls Titanium will knock your socks off. As of this writing Titanium version 0.8 is days way from being released. The product has been in beta for about a year now and they will have a full public release when they get to version 1.0 (or so I understand). With the the release of 0.8 we believe they have plugged all the holes. In our eyes this product is ready for real production use.

Add is Positively Effected by Computer Games

July 15th, 2009

There is evidence that electronic games can help improve focus in both children and adults with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). This software addresses the most common and fundamental symptom by helping to increase the individuals ability to retain focus.

Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), is a neurobehavioral developmental disorder that affects about 3-5% of the world’s population under the age of 19. This disorder is closely related to ADD and they are often referred to interchangeably. This disorder’s typical onset is during childhood. ADHD is characterized by a persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity. Forgetfulness, poor impulse control or impulsivity, and distractibility are all characteristic of this disorder. ADHD is currently considered to be a persistent and chronic condition for which no medical cure is available. ADHD is most commonly diagnosed in children. Diagnoses of adults with this disorder have increased over the past decade. Studies show that approximately 60% of children diagnosed with ADHD retain the condition as adults. One-fifth of all cases are estimated to be caused from trauma or toxic exposure. Methods of treatment usually involve some combination of medications, behavior modifications, life style changes, and counseling.

The most common symptoms of ADHD are distractibility, difficulty with concentration and focus, short term memory slippage, procrastination, problems organizing ideas and belongings, tardiness, impulsivity, and weak planning and execution. There are an incredibly large number of very intelligent and capable individuals who find themselves limited by this disorder. The discovery of new methods to modify the behaviors affected is very exciting and inspirational.
Educational computer software is noted for it’s ability to engage a child and improve various learning skills while keeping the gamer entertained. Software engineers have created software that is specifically designed to improve attention and focus in individuals with ADD. New learning technology enables us to monitor and teach learning skills while enhancing confidence. I will overview three different products as follows;

Play Attention

Peter Freer created Play Attention, a system that enables children and adults with ADHD to connect their brain waves directly to a home computer.

“They can actually see what’s happening to their brain waves as it occurs,” says Freer, CEO of Unique Logic + Technology, the Asheville, North Carolina, manufacturer of the game.

The user puts on a helmet embedded with sensors and learns to control the action on the screen with his brain waves. Focusing on a flying bird causes it to fly higher; distraction causes the bird to fly lower. Another exercise enables a person to work on his long-range focus by building a tower with moving blocks. A challenging exercise involves sitting at the controls of a spaceship, deflecting the white asteroids that are flying toward it. This helps develop discriminatory processing and impulse control.

A teacher, therapist, or coach can only describe what focus feels like to someone with ADHD. Play Attention lets the user experience what being attentive actually feels like.

A student can even utilize the game while doing homework. The student would wear the helmet while doing an assignment and gauge his attention level by part taking in a short exercise in the game.

SmartDriver

SmartDriver, created by Joseph Sandford, helps any driver, or future driver, with focus problems to keep his thoughts on the road. The game works with or without a steering wheel for computer driving simulators. SmartDriver is different from the typical driving game as it requires patience and responsibility, not a love of hairpin turns. You must follow the rules of the road and heed speed limits, traffic lights, and other vehicles. SmartDriver contains enough lights and sounds to keep the user interested.

S.M.A.R.T. BrainGames

S.M.A.R.T BrainGames system converts any home video or computer game into a neurofeedback device. Using new technology developed by NASA, the S.M.A.R.T. (Self Mastery and Regulation Training) BrainGames system includes a state-of-the-art, wireless, handheld game controller. It looks and works like any other game controller, with the added feature of receiving brain wave signals from a headset worn by the player. The headset tracks the frequency of the user’s brain waves while he plays. When the player exhibits low-frequency patterns during, say, a car race at the track, his car slows and other cars pass him. That gets his attention, so he concentrates, producing higher-frequency brain waves. His car then speeds up and results in positive reinforcement for his cerebral change. The idea is that the higher-frequency pattern will continue even after kids stop playing the game.

The main difference that was found between S.M.A.R.T BrainGames and traditional equipment is motivation. Olafur Palsson, Ph.D., of Eastern Virginia Medical School in Richmond, a co-inventor of the NASA system stated that it was easier for parents to convince children to come to his clinic when they knew they would be playing S.M.A.R.T BrainGames. It is noteworthy that the games that don’t work well are the shoot-’em-up, blood-and-guts kind, because there is poor forward motion. Games that involve steady motion, like driving a car or flying an airplane, work best.

There is evidence that electronic games can help improve focus in both children and adults with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). This software addresses the most common and fundamental symptom by helping to increase the individuals ability to retain focus. The combination of the focus building technology with games people enjoy playing has been successful and beneficial. Hopefully, we will see more to come!

I have an extensive background in Finance and Fiscal Procedure. I also have a web business where I offer Educational Computer Software and Games. I am very interested in the product itself as well as the subject matter that it involves.

Consumer Reports – Home-networking

July 14th, 2009

A network allows a single broadband account to be shared throughout the home. Unfortunately, such networking is impractical with dial-up Internet service–one of several reasons you might want to consider broadband.

WHAT’S AVAILABLE

Home networking is getting a boost from improvements in the range, speed, and cost of wireless networks. If you own a laptop computer that has wireless capability, a wireless network now allows you to surf the Web at broadband speeds from most places in your house, yard, or apartment. Leading brands of wireless routers include D-Link, Netgear, and Linksys. Wired networking is far from obsolete, however, since it still provides the most secure and reliable connections. Indeed, for many households the best solution for sharing a broadband connection–or a printer, music files, or digital photos–among multiple computers might be a network that includes both wired and wireless.

Ethernet, or wired, networks. Wired networks are very secure by themselves, with no special security measures necessary. They are reliable, and usually immune to interference. They offer the fastest data transfer–up to 94 megabits per second for the common 10/100 type, enough for virtually any data application.

IMPORTANT FEATURES

One drawback is that you can’t easily move your computer around the home. Routing cables throughout the home can be a hassle or expensive. Price range: $50 to $100 for one router and a cable to connect two fairly new computers. Also, there might be additional costs for routing cable through the home. Wi-Fi, 802.11g (wireless). There are no cables to connect or rout with a wireless network, and there are minimal installation costs. Mobility is the key–the wireless network supplies signals virtually anywhere around the home. You will need to take additional steps in terms of security, without which your data are vulnerable to hackers. Thick walls can reduce signal strength, which might vary in different areas of the home or even within a room. Wi-Fi networks might interfere with cordless phones, baby monitors, and other wireless devices. These networks are only 25 percent as fast as Ethernet, but they’re still fine for typical networking uses, such as Web surfing and e-mail. Price range: $200 or less for a router and client cards to allow two computers to use the network wirelessly

HOW TO CHOOSE

Plan your network. You’ll probably want to locate the router near the source of your broadband service–usually a cable or DSL modem. The router and the modem will be connected by an Ethernet cable. But the connections between the router and the computers in the network might be either wired or wireless.

Choose a wireless router. That is the official term for the models that support both Ethernet and Wi-Fi. Even if you don’t need wireless capability now, acquiring it costs little extra (perhaps $10 or so) compared with a wired model, and might spare your having to replace the router if you want to add a wireless device to it in the future.

Stick with the 802.11g wireless standard. Wi-Fi is continually evolving, with new standards designed to increase broadcast range and speed, thus increasing the network’s ability to handle new types of information. The name of the standard is usually listed on the router’s package, as a letter suffix to the technical term for Wi-Fi, which is 802.11. Currently the most common standard is known as 802.11g. We think it’s the best choice for most people.

The 802.11g networks we tested all had sufficient range and speed to provide coverage throughout most homes. The data speeds we measured fell short of the standard speed for 802.11g. But all routers were much faster than the typical speed of a broadband Internet connection.

If you already have a wireless network that uses 802.11a or 802.11b, two older standards, consider upgrading only if you find the range, speed, or reliability of your network wanting.

At the other end of the spectrum are routers that use early variants of the latest Wi-Fi standard, 802.11n. Frequently referred to with terms such as “MIMO,” “Super G,” or “pre-n,” such models might not be compatible with the actual “n” standard, which is due in late 2006. They also require that you buy matching networking adapters, even for computers with built-in 802.11g capability.

Consider one of these new routers only if you have range problems that can’t be solved in other ways. In our tests, they were better at penetrating walls than 802.11g routers, and some offered data speeds that were twice as fast. But they were just as likely to interfere with (or receive interference from) cordless phones and other devices.

Consider whether and how you’ll share a printer. A network lets you avoid the cost of putting a printer in every room by sharing one. To do this, you can use a printer with built-in network capability.

It’s possible to share a non-networked printer by attaching it to the network via a print server, a device that costs $70 to $100 and is the size of a large paperback. There may be issues of interference with some printer-management software, however. Any PC connected to a printer can also serve as a print server for the other computers on the network, though you must leave that computer on when you’re printing.

Consider networking issues for other devices. An increasing number of devices that typically connect to a single computer–PDAs, printers, and video-game consoles–are now Wi-Fi compatible. If you plan to connect any of them to your network, make sure they’re compatible with the network security you set up.

Check whether you need to buy adapters. Every computer on your network will require an adapter to allow it to communicate with the network; the question is whether it already has one built in. If you’re using Ethernet to connect a computer bought within the past three years or so, the adapter will most likely be built into the unit. The same applies to recent-vintage laptops, which should have built-in 802.11g capability.

If you need to buy a network adapter for your desktop, you can choose either an internal PC-card version, which requires opening the computer case for installation, or a USB version, which plugs into a USB port. Laptops can use either a PCI-card or USB adapter. In all cases, the cost should be no more than $60.

Resist professional installation help. Computer retailers might try to sell you on professional installation for your new network, starting at a cost of $150 or so. But wiring aside, today’s networks are so easy to set up that you shouldn’t take them up on their offer if you’re comfortable with technology.

Network gear usually comes with instructions and access to free 24/7 technical support. And you can always come back to the retailer for help in troubleshooting the network if necessary.

Shop by return policy. For all your best efforts, the network equipment you’ve bought might not be compatible with your home. For example, your walls and floors might be especially resistant to wireless transmission (which might be the case if they have a lot of moisture, metal, or other highly conductive material in them). Before you buy, check the store’s return policies. Consider a retailer with a generous one.

Web 2.0 and the Ajax Technology

July 12th, 2009

Ajax, Web 2.0, etc. are the buzz words of this century, may be more than that. Web 2.0 is the supposed second generation of internet-based services and Ajax (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML) is the platform on which it is built. These bring vast improvement to the usability, design and functionality of websites.

Let’s take a wide look. The characteristics of Web 2.0 are many. Increased user experience, wide participation, metadata, dynamic content, web standards, scalability, freedom, collective intelligence through user participation, etc. form some of it. The main purpose of Web 2.0 is to let the <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview(‘/outgoing/article_exit_link’);” href=”http://tutorialajax.com”> jQuery tutorial </a> users get together and cooperate and share online. It is all about user-content – like its byproducts – blogs, wikis, social bookmarking, folksonomies, podcasting, and so on. Following are the elements that go about making web 2.0.

Platform: This concept suggests that Web 2.0 is a foundation that needs to be built and that is not self-contained.

Emerging: It is supposed to be the second generation internet and is a rapidly evolving platform.

Network: There is no one-man-show here. This is built on a global network. This is not limited to any particular device also.

Creation & Users: Web 2.0 corrodes all borders and has a high gravity. Any user can involve in the creation process. Rather than mere participation, it’s the creation aspect that makes Web 2.0 distinct.

Get-together: It enables users and communities to get together in the creation process like never before.

Now let’s take a look at what builds Web 2.0. It is Ajax. If you are a Gmail user you have experienced Ajax. It is a programming language that enables the dynamic and asynchronous behavior on web without having to refresh the browser pages. Thus you can save on bandwidth and make web more efficient.

Ajax is built on JavaScript, XML, HTML and CSS. Sufficient Knowledge of JavaScript helps you to master Ajax since it uses JavaScript as its client side programming language. This is how it’s enabled to fetch data from the server. Most of Google’s applications, other prominent ones like chats, games, widgets, etc. are Web 2.0 and levered by Ajax. The asynchronous communication of the user with the server enabled by Ajax helps the user to have continuous interaction also undisturbed by page refreshes.

Unluckily, detailed tutorials on learning Ajax are few. Plus, the XMLHttpRequest number of JavaScript used is tough for beginners. Anyhow JavaScript libraries offer many easier ways. JQuery, YUI, Rico, etc. are examples which support Ajax and enable the easy building of web applications. Prototype is another JavaScript library that makes JavaScript fun. Take advantage of such libraries and frameworks and learn Ajax. Or to go on the hard route, you can get the help of the tutorials and master it.

With Ajax, you can maximize the quality to great extends. Ajax has to stay. It is not a new language but it reconstructs <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview(‘/outgoing/article_exit_link’);” href=”http://tutorialajax.com”> javascript tutorial </a>and redesigns the existing ones. With Ajax, you can create faster, better, smaller and worthier Web 2.0 applications. It is all about the betterment of web applications.

Web 2.0 and Ajax never stop to amaze us. Web 2.0 lets us gather information from any corner in the world and still enables its personalization to meet a single user’s needs. Let information flow freely.

The Rise of Computer Game Addiction

July 12th, 2009

In this day and age, with hardcore chemicals being the scourge of civilized life, heroin, cocaine, vicodin, all the classes of drugs that are man-made and not naturally produced or even those that are natural, it seems silly to talk of addiction to a computer game. But it is neither silly nor trivial. Take heed!

The sheer popularity of these games, played on home computers, Xbox’s, Playstations, Gamecubes and other consoles, shows that this addiction does not affect everyone equally. Some people can play a game for an hour, then go back to work, or watch TV and not give a second thought to the game. Others play it 8 hours a day or more, forgoing meals, family, work, and daily chores.

The corporations that produce these games do not help with the problem, in fact they stoke the fires into roaring blazes. Clearly, they understand that there are millions of people who will forgo simple things in life to pay $10 a month to play on a game for objects and things that are intangible. So they feed the addiction, releasing new objects obtainable only in the online world, or releasing new add-on upgrades and expansion sets for another $50. The bottom line is money of course, they are corporations who are responsible to their shareholders, and no-one wants to blame them for the ruinous addiction they are causing. With ever larger online worlds entering the gaming fray (World of Warcraft, Everquest 2 …), it seems that this is a problem that will only increase.

Psychologists have labelled this as Computer Addiction or Internet Addictive Disorder, a problem very similar to Pathological Gambling or Compulsive Shopping, and sadly it does not just affect one person, but seeps into family life affecting those around the addicted. This is a real disorder, not imagined, and those afflicted need to seek professional help and more significantly, need the love, comfort and support of friends and family. Perhaps a little tough love is in order too, regulate the computer time, turn off your child’s playstation after they have played for an hour, get them involved in real world activities that have nothing to do with a computer.

This is not an American phenomena, or European, this is world-wide, and only getting worse. The Chinese have started camps for adolescents addicted to computers, in a land where nearly 15% of adolescents suffer from Internet Addiction Disorder according to the China Internet Information Center.

Pro JavaScript – Editors

Pro JavaScript – IDEs

JavaScript has seen a rise in popularity in the last five years, from almost dying a death from incompatible browser versions.  Instead, modern web developers have a great arsenal of tools to help them create quality JavaScript for every web application.

IDEs

Server-side developers have long enjoyed a great set of tools, which kept getting better every year.  JavaScript developers had traditionally been expected to code by hand, or perhaps (if they were lucky) have syntax highlighting (which often didn’t work correctly).  That’s changed over the past several years with a number of high-quality Integrated Development Environments (IDEs) catering to or at least supporting JavaScript.

Aptana
Perhaps the first major IDE specifically written to cater to JavaScript developers, Aptana has become a staple with many developers of all stripes.  Aptana’s JavaScript support goes beyond syntax coloring, and includes bundled support for a dozen or so of the top JavaScript frameworks (including Dojo, jQuery, YUI, MochiKit and many more).  Aptana was one of the earlier IDEs to support “code completion” for the JavaScript libraries.  By typing just part of a JavaScript operation, and hitting a key, the IDE will show you various options on how to complete the code (saving typing and potentially hours of debugging because of one wrong keystroke!)

Eclipse
Eclipse is the granddaddy of extendible IDEs.  Long just for the Java platform, Eclipse has been extended to support multiple major languages, including JavaScript, through customization and plugins.  Aptana is itself a highly customized and focused version of Eclipse, but still Eclipse all the same.  For those already using Eclipse for web development, adding in a JavaScript plugin will net you some of the benefits of Aptana with none of the learning curve.

NetBeans
Long considered “past it”, NetBeans has seen a resurgence in recent years, with renewed development on the core platform, and extensive support for languages like PHP, Ruby and others, in addition to Java.  (Note – Aptana and Eclipse also offer support for multiple server side languages, although only Aptana and NetBeans provides good ‘out of the box’ experiences for anything beyond Java).  NetBeans is not based on Eclipse, but is its own program.  For those who don’t like the visual stylings of Eclipse may find NetBeans a welcome change.

Microsoft Visual Studio
Microsoft earlier announced that it would bundle and support jQuery in its Visual Studio lines.  While not offering extensive support for other languages like PHP yet, those developers who are already working in an MS environment would do well to look in to enabling jQuery support to get code completion and inline documentation help while developing.

Kraepelin Test Proves That Computer Games Stunting the Teen Brains

July 6th, 2009

Computer games though very interesting and enjoying are gradually proving to be a threat to the children who are growing addicted to it. Using the most sophisticated technology, it has been found that the violence or the tendency to lose control of one is not due to children absorbing the aggression involved in the computer game itself as it was earlier said but rather to the damage done by checking the growth and development of the mind as computer game only stimulate the activity in the parts of the brain associated with vision and movement.

Hi-tech maps of the mind of the teenagers playing computer games and those who keep themselves engage in simple, repetitive arithmetical exercise shows and prove that the computer game only stimulated activity in the parts of the brain associated with vision and movement whereas arithmetic stimulated brain activity in both the left and right hemispheres of the frontal lobe – the area of the brain most associated with learning, memory and emotion. Frontal lobe is very important part of our brain which continues to develop till we attain the age of 20. Its main function is to check an individual’s behavior. The more work done to thicken the fibers connecting the neurons in this part of the brain, the better the child’s ability will be to control their behavior and which is unfortunately underdeveloped in the children playing computer games.

Therefore it very significant for every students or children to follow activities like reading aloud or learning arithmetic or exercising crossword puzzle that will help them to develop their frontal lobe and develop in them the power of self control. This article is not recommending to completely stop plying computer games but to remind people that too much of anything is bad and injurious to health. Hats off to brain-mapping expert Professor Ryuta Kawashima and his team at Tohoku University in Japan for their wonderful research of measuring the level of brain activity that will help both the students and the manufacturers to think on this matter that was alarmingly halting the process of brain development and affecting their ability to control potentially anti-social elements of their behavior.

Therefore it is clear that to develop, retain the creativity and helping your child/children to become good people then remember not to pressurize your child for anything to worsen the case instead with your love and soft words try to change the schedule and indulge him in other interesting works. Encouraging him to read aloud, practice arithmetic, play outside with other children and interact and to communicate with others as much as possible.

Networking Solution for Small and Large Business

July 6th, 2009

The facts of small and large business networking solutions are more or less the same. Importance of effective network installation service and reliable network security & support services cannot be denied for any type of business, irrespective of its size and scale. Every organization needs networking solutions and employs onshore or offshore team for handling the networking issues from time to time. Server down, Connectivity issues, and akin are some of the usual network related issues that distract a business working day on an average. All such problems are of high importance and must be corrected on first priority basis. So there is always a need for a networking engineer team with in-depth knowledge of the networking concepts and fair grasp of the practical know how, so as to address the issues with optimum speed.

Hiring a team of such a competency is always very expensive and probably not a feasible option for the small businesses. To the rescue are organizations with experts in networking solutions, who customize the small and large business networking solutions to your exact requirements. The cost effectiveness and durability of the network installation service and network security and other support services becomes something not to worry about. There are some key points one must ask oneself, while searching for a networking solutions team, as and when you decide to hire Network security & support services.

Which geographical location should be preferred while hiring a networking solution? (Neighboring, provincial or state-wide)?

What demographics would suit your requirements (income specific, etc.)?

What should be the strength of the Networking solutions team?

It’s better to have the team seated within the organization, as thus they will be better able to tackle networking issues of connectivity or server issues. They will be able to give a better backup solution. Networking solution team also has the competency of establishing extensive network security. Network security is of high importance for any organization that has the network installed. There are various types to establish network security. This depends on the requirements and the profile of the organization.

login script with jquery and php

July 4th, 2009

This video shows you how to make a login script work with a database. We use javascript, jquery, php and mysql for this. You should really watch the ajax videos to get a basis for this. Also you need to have a server to run this, watch the first video on development environment to learn how to do that. Towards the end i mistyped two things. I missed the double == sign in the if statement and the I spelled result wrong. Sorry If i went a little fast, I really don’t want to have any more part1 and 2 videos.
