jquery

March 30th, 2009

Google Tech Talks April, 3 2008 ABSTRACT jquery is a javascript library that stands out among its competitors because it is faster, focuses on writing less code, and is very extensible. In this talk, I will explore jquery and how to use it. I will start off talking about the basics of using jquery. Then, I will talk about building plugins. Finally, time permitting, I will take apart some plugins and talk about how they work, and I will show the nitty gritty details of the library. Speaker: Dmitri Gaskin Dmitri Gaskin drinks code with his cereal for breakfast every morning. He’s a jquery whiz and a Drupal know-it-all. He contributes patches for both Open Source projects. In the Drupal world, he maintains many modules, is on the security team, and is involved in the upcoming Summer of Code as a mentor and administrator. Dmitri has given many talks on Drupal and jquery, in such places as Logitech, Drupalcon and live on a radio show out of LA When Dmitri isn’t coding, a very rare occurrence, he is playing and composing contemporary music. And attending classes in the 6th grade. (He’s only 12.)

The Strange Language Of Computer Games

March 29th, 2009

Computer games and video games have spawned another language – one which is littered with either words that have meaning only within the game itself, or have a specific meaning to the game that would be difficult to understand outside of the game, or a mass of acronyms and abbreviations that make an average conversation between two gamers look as though somebody took away all almost the vowels, shook the letters up together in a big box, ditched about half of them, and then took two or three out randomly at a time to construct a sentence.

The test of a true gamer would be to understand a sentence which might run along the lines of ‘lol, pwned – is drop bop? Do CoT later? Brb’ – what looks like garbled rubbish. Translated into proper English the sentence might read – ‘That was funny – that character just got heavily defeated. Can you sell the item it dropped, or will it be limited to whoever picks it up? Shall we do the part of the game called ‘Caverns of Time’ later? Hang on a minute, I just have to go – I’ll be back in a minute.’

The reason that gamers use abbreviated words in this way is partly because it saves time when you type the same few words a great deal of the time, and also, it means that you can talk or communicate more quickly. This allows gamers to discuss tactics whilst very busily involved in a complex battle.

Many gamers are now starting to use advances in internet technology to use voice communications instead, which can improve game play when working as part of a team. Each player has a microphone and either headphones or speakers, and can then talk to the other players, wherever on the planet they may be. The problem with this, of course, is that in a very busy battle there can be a great many people in a group – sometimes as many as fifty, and voice communications becomes impossible. A few text commands using key words is still a preferred method in these situations.

To provide a few explanations of some of the most common video game abbreviations, the word ‘lol’ is an acronym for ‘laugh out loud’ and is used to express humour, usually in response to something funny that someone has said or done. Extensions to this are ‘rofl’ which means ‘rolling on the floor laughing’ which denotes great humour, and there are other, less repeatable alternatives beyond this.

The word ‘pwned’ has a strange heritage, and comes from a misspelling on an old, but very popular computer game. The word was supposed to be ‘owned’ and denoted the fact that one team or the other had conquered territory and now occupied, or owned, the opponent’s base. This has remained a popular word to use, and now refers to a situation where a player, monster or group has been conquered or defeated, at which point they are said to have been ‘pwned’. ‘I pwned you’ would mean ‘I have defeated you’, and is usually said within the context of either humour or derision.

Is it Too Violent? –computer Games

March 26th, 2009

The human is a quite bloodthirsty creature with unhidden desire to see violent acts or, even worse, to do it himself. For example, Roman Empire was famous with their gladiator fights, enthralling and awful performances which were requested by Roman crowd and by their request the gladiator-loser is killed by the gladiator-winner. Actually, if the winner would refuse or ignore the desire of the crowd – they both could be given as a dinner to tigers. But, of course, the modern society we live in prevents and suppresses our violent instincts… to the better. At lease, we keep living, not killing one another for an entertainment.

But our insatiable human nature still desires to see a blood, an agony of a human body or at least an alien or an animal, which is more preferable… As it is not allowed in the real life – the virtual world where everything is possible and everything is permitted gives lots of opportunities to satisfy a human. Clever game producers do not lose a chance to “catch a rabbit” – the game industry is filled with games with shooting, killing, torturing, murdering in many eccentric ways. Let’s find out which games are considered like “most violent” (I want to admit, it is very objective list, so, please, no offence if your favorite game didn’t come into!)

World of Warcraft – well, it doesn’t seem so cruel (I mean, the age of players is from 13 and graphics are quite resistible) but have you read an instructions for the game? Have you passed those quests where you have to torture people, cut their heads and other parts of the body? So you can play it with pleasure if you have a stable psychic.

God of War is a waterfall of unrelenting violence. Very brutal, cruel and bloody computer game where the hero is torturing human creatures, ripping, murdering… no comments. If you are fan of such games – don’t miss it!

Well known Mortal Kombat – I think everyone played this video game. It was very popular in 90s, and undergo the critics concerning the high level of violence in the game. “Fatality” (it is a point when the winner is “finishing” the loser: for example, cutting his head, burning him alive etc.) – the cruelest part of the game indeed.

Thrill Kill – this fighting game is better to see then to read a description. Human souls are fighting on the way to hell… Do you imaging what is going on there?? It is a mess, a mix of human body parts, entrails, blood and the like.

Manhunt – the hero of this game is a convicted murderer, he has an offer to make a TV show, very specific one. He has to face same obsessive maniacs and killers as himself killing them in bloodiest and nasty ways. If he survives night in this hell – he is free… I bet, creators were having fun, providing a best TV camera close views in the way to see most dreadful executions. Well, the nature is a nature, but let’s do not forget that the reality is not a virtual world, and we should not evince our aggression and other negative emotions, acts to any live creature as there are many other sides of human nature which are more powerful and making us humane. Never forget about who we are!

On my website you can find different flash games, not as cruel as above but not less interesting action games and fascinating arcade games online and free.

How to Secure Your Wireless Network

March 24th, 2009

Wireless networks are great and allow us to set up networks quickly, easily and without the hassle of physically running cables etc.

However wireless networks need to be secure from outside / unauthorised users otherwise people can use your network for their own malicious intentions. An example of this is people using your wireless connection to connect to the internet and download illegal content. As it is your internet connection it is your responsibility.

So how do you secure your wireless network?

Well there are several things you can do so here are some basic security steps:

TURN OFF SSID Broadcasting – Once you have all your required computers (wireless clients / devices) on your network, TURN OFF SSID broadcasting so that no one can see your wireless network.
Change the name of your SSID from default to something else. For example a SSID named Netgear easily identifies your network and its hardware.
Change default router username and passwords. Most routers have the same, default admin username and password. So all an intruder has to do is login to your router using the defaults and then lock you out.
Use MAC address filtering – set which devices can connect to your wireless network by their MAC address. Use ipconfig / all to identify your MAC address.
Use IP filtering or IP address reservations so that only those IP’s can access the network.
Use Port filtering / blocking to block ports you do not need open.
Use authentication – either PSK or EAP – DO NOT LEAVE AUTHENTICATION OPEN.
Use encryption to protect your data. WEP and WPA are 2 types of encryption however WPA is recommended.
Set logon hours so that people cannot access your network out of hours.
Use a wireless network analyser such as Netstumbler (free) to test your network.

Using the above wireless network security steps will help protect your wireless network from unauthorised use and prying eyes.

The One Page Website – How To Create A One Page Website Using Jquery!

March 22nd, 2009

Is it possible to create a one page website?

One that can provide relevant information on your chosen topic and yet still be lightweight and easy to write AND feature well in the search engines?

Well the answer is undoubtedly yes! And here’s where I will tell you how.

We’ll go through the entire site step by step.

1. Get jquery at www.jquery.com!

What is jquery?

Jquery is a super-lightweight multi-functional javascript library which allows you complete control over every aspect of your web pages (CSS and HTML).

It’s a simple include that you provide in your web page…

eg. “<script type=”text/javascript” src=”jquery.js”></script>”

Check out the jquery.com website to get more details, but for the time begin, just understand that we need this to dynamically “call in” content to our one page site.

2. Get a template for your site!

Try http://www.freecsstemplates.org/ for some great free web templates.

Pick a template you like and create the file index.html.

This will be your “one page” site and all content will be “pulled” into this page.

3. Create your content area

You must now create the DIV tag where your content will be placed.

A line of code something like…

“<div id=”content”></div>”

is required in the middle of your page.

This is where jquery will place your content.

4. Create small files to hold your content.

You’ll need to create files that will hold your content in basic HTML format.

For example, aboutus.html may contain…

About Us

WebCom Systems has been in the internet business

for over 10 years now and has vast experience in developing

every type of site from basic advertising sites to large ecommerce software applications for a variety of businesses.

5. Create a menu to call in the content

Now this is where the jquery magic begins! We now need a simple menu to drive the website.

First we need a javascript function to call from our menu, here it is…

“<script>function Call_content(url){$(“#content”).fadeOut(‘fast’).load(url).fadeIn(‘slow’);}</script>”

So, your menu that call this javascript function should look a bit like this…

About Us

So there we have it! You can now add as many content files as you like and add them to your menu!

Easy eh?

Now to complete the whole setup, remember to

-> add your site to Google webmaster tools
-> add relevant keywords and description to your page

-> add in Google Analytics for site stats
-> maybe add in a few adsense adverts!

And there you have it, a one page website!

Please feel free to visit my company website at http://www.webcomsystems.biz to see a working example of this.

Eve Online – A Complete Computer Game Review.

March 20th, 2009

Simply imagine you are piloting your space ship through space, on a search for fortune and fame. Perhaps you are in the process of working a trade route, transporting ore from a central mining area to a heavily industrialized planet in order to sell it at a huge fortune. Just as you are flying through the star system, your sensors pick up on something…it’s the pirates after you, and you sire off a few shots to keep them away.

One of them shouts out at you, “You must hand over your cargo or die.” Though you consider negotiating with them, but realize it’s of no use. However you fire off a missle salvo at the pirate closest to you, and he crumbles into dust. As you make a run back to planet, another two pirates open fire thus weakening your shields. Miraculously you duck into its protection just as your shields breaks up, barely escaping death and heading towards the biggest sale of your life.

Eve Online is one of the several MMORPGs that can be found on the internet. An MMORPG stands for a Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game. A MMORPG like Eve Online is unlike a number of computer games in that in a regular computer game, where you are the sole human player; as for all the other characters you relate with are simply computerized “bots.”

On the other hand in MMORPGs you’re interacting with other people who populate the world of the game. There are NPCs (Non Player Characters), who are just a part of the game, however for the most part you’re interacting with other people. For instance, the pirates in the Eve Online form the other people, at times on other parts of the world, linked through the Eve Online Server. If you receive messages, these are sent out by someone on the other end.

Although MMORPGs have been around for a long time (Everquest was definitely one of the most popular of all time), they are at present becoming increasingly more popular. Despite the fact the earliest MMORPGs were almost all fantasy based games that were full of wizards, warriors and dragons, many MMORPGs have split out. For instance, Eve Online is a futuristic, space-based combat and trading game, while The Sims Online is based on the popular Sims living and building game engine. A number of people are drawn to MMORPGs since they allow them to play an interesting computer game which enables them to interact with other people, keeping the player’s interest and avoiding the predictability that some games can lapse into. Eve Online and other similar games function much alike small worlds with their own leaders, heroes, crooks, followers, wars and politics thus making the fantasy worlds that much closer to reality.

Enhance Computer Game’s Performance – 6 Amateur Tips

March 17th, 2009

There are a few simple maintenance tips that will optimize your game experience. These tips are for the computer amateur! Minimal technical details to follow!

Keep the discs themselves clean. You can purchase disc cleaner/repairer. But preventative maintenance is the better alternative! If you are also using downloaded games it may be necessary to uninstall and reinstall the files after repeated use.

Close any programs that are not being used. If your computer is trying to run too many programs, use too many of its resources, when also trying to play a graphic intensive game, the graphics will be choppy, and figures will move slowly.

Download CCleaner for free from www.ccleaner.com. CCleaner is a freeware system optimization and privacy tool. It removes unused files from your system – allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your internet history. But the best parts are that it’s fast (normally taking less than a second to run) and incredibly simple (double click the icon and then click run). CCleaner contains no spyware or adware. You can run it as often as you like depending on your frequency of computer use.

Disable anti-virus software. Anti-virus programs can slow down the loading and playing of games. You can disable the anti virus software by right clicking on the icon and choosing disable. Remember to turn it back on when you log back on to the Internet!

Shutdown your computer properly. By not shutting your computer down using the start button you run the risk of losing data and in turn making files not work as efficiently.

Take advantage of free operating system updates. Often times you are prompted but in the event that you are not you can easily do a quick search for the latest updates.

By staying on top of these simple maintenance tasks you will optimize computer game’s performance!

I have an extensive background in Finance and Fiscal Procedure. I also have a web business where I offer Educational Computer Software and Games. I am very interested in the product itself as well as the subject matter that it involves.

How Secure is Your IT Network?

March 16th, 2009

Nowadays, just about all major businesses and corporations are powered by one or more IT networks and continuously serves as the life and blood of day to day business operations. Each of the units or nodes of the network are powered by computers and individuals that work together in their dedicated positions and fulfil their roles assigned. IT networks are so delicate since any disturbance in the network can either hinder or slow down the overall network performance to a certain degree. Not only must the network administrators do their jobs in preventing these issues from happening, but they must also evaluate how secure their IT networks are.

What about your network?

Have you ever considered doing a security audit for your network?

Just because your network has never bumped into any problems doesn’t mean that the security is at its maximum. Therefore it is important to test your computer for any network vulnerabilities and stay updated with the current trends to see if new network vulnerabilities are discovered that may pose a threat to your network one day.

There will always be people that are up to no good in developing hacking programs and viruses that are specifically meant to disrupt or harm networks directly. These methods may involve data theft, data corruption, or a combination of the two and for the average business this can be a serious threat to the wellbeing of the network and business.

Security software and services are one of the allies of these networks that aim to hinder these rogue software and stay one step ahead of the threats to prevent IT networks from suffering at all. The payload of these vulnerabilities can sometimes be irreversible like if data is stolen so preventative measures must be forced, especially in businesses that have highly sensitive data in their servers.

Resorting to the various security software and services shouldn’t be the only option, as they may not have defence to the newest threats out there right away. By making a habit to do your own network security maintenances, you can keep these new threats at bay and wait for your network security programs to update.

Common things to protect are sensitive files and entry web pages of the network. Passwords are a good first line defence to restrict access to the individuals within the network who know the password. Making the password complicated can reduce the risks of brute force attacks – a common method in breaking through password protected areas. Using the latest system software from operating system to other programs that have network access can also reduce the chances of a security breech since patches aim to plug in security holes.

Always take some time off to check your networks security. If you have no knowledge on how to do it, you can always ask a skilled hacker to try and break into your network. Former hackers are the best people to consult as these people dedicate themselves to helping personnel and using their previous hacking to improve the security of networks. This will allow your network to run smoothly without fear of a network crisis.

Derek Rogers is a freelance writer who writes for a number of UK businesses. For Network Security, he recommends Network 24, a leading network security solution company.
