The importance of a well designed website is absolutely crucial to future business, particularly when online is used as a channel for sales. With Internet penetration in the UK at over 65 per cent and over 86 per cent of these connections through broadband (source: Office for National Statistics), your website’s often the first port of call for any prospective customers looking for information about your company. This article looks at the pitfalls of website design patterns and how companies can use them successfully to aid website design, helping to ensure an online proposition that’s as effective as possible. What are design patterns? User Interface (UI) design patterns serve as common solutions to well-known design problems. for visit to:-www.automatic-content.com They’re arranged in a library for use as a reference or inspiration when designing new sites. Wikipedia describes design patterns as “a general reusable solution to a commonly occurring problem in software design”. Unfortunately though, large scale patterns have been appropriated by some as an alternative to expensive website design. After all, an ecommerce site should just be like other successful ecommerce sites and an informational site should just be like other popular informational sites, right? Actually, this is a misconception; patterns aren’t a substitute for good designers and a good design process. Pattern usage Some organisations have implemented UI patterns and actively encourage their use during design and production projects. Yahoo! for example has a comprehensive library of useful small scale patterns which can be used by Yahoo! Teams. Some organisations have avoided the use of pattern libraries because they’ve felt that highly generalised patterns have limited use when applied to the wide ranging design problems they address as a business. The level of research / modification required to get a design pattern working within a new, unfamiliar context of use is potentially the same as simply starting from scratch. Also the relative immaturity of patterns in UI design means that there’s an overhead that has to be factored in to maintain the pattern library. So the real question is, should UI patterns really be a staple part of website design, or are you better off always starting from scratch? The answer is, that as ever ‘it depends’. Unique selling points Your customers and the way you as a business meet their needs is by definition unique. You need a unique selling point for your site, it’s no use just doing what your competitors have done with their sites. By using patterns throughout your website design you could create a site that’s elements are tried and tested. But to what extent can you really trust that these patterns actually represent the best way to meet your customer’s needs? Another downside of the overuse of patterns is the potential to narrow the design process. By using UI patterns inappropriately within your website design, there’s the strong possibility that you are limiting the opportunity for innovation. If your site does nothing that’s groundbreaking, or worse still, doesn’t even attempt to improve on the status quo, you’ll have a harder time meeting your business’ goals. Advantages However, despite what the negatives may suggest, design patterns do have their uses. One obvious upside for UI design patterns is the very nature of using tried and tested solutions within a design project. To achieve the best for our sites, we as UI designers need to look at common solutions to common problems. This will help us to understand precisely when and where to apply our design efforts. Another great use for patterns and pattern libraries is their potential for use as an inspirational ‘source book’ to tap into design thinking outside of your immediate experience. There are some really good pattern libraries and UI example resources where these ideas are being explored at Welie.com, The UI Pattern Factory, Pattern Tap, and Designing Interfaces. However, there are unfortunately no guarantees that design patterns will save you either time or money. Conclusion The risks of inappropriate use of UI design patterns are clearer than the advantages. Like any form of generalised guidance it’s important that the limits and scope of design patterns are taken into account when deciding whether to make use of them or not. UI design patterns, when taken out of a particular context of use or problem domain, may be useless without further adaptation and testing. In the instances where you decide that it is appropriate put UI patterns into practice, you must ensure that you understand the context in which the pattern was conceived and its suitability for the proposed use. Without this you will not realise the potential of patterns to allow you to focus on more business critical design.

Design patterns are a relatively new concept in software engineering, and have their origins in civil engineering. Essentially they are a blueprint for solving a specific problem, allowing the benefits of an optimal solution to be carried forward to new implementations.

The application of design patterns to the domain of software engineering was first formalised in the book “Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software” by Eric Gamma, Richard Helm, Ralph Johnson, and John Vlissides, in 1995. The book selected 23 patterns considered to be core to understanding the pattern approach in solving software engineering problems.

While this book also set out many principles, it did not make a general template for pattern use available to the wider audience. Subsequently, applying patterns has not yet itself become a pattern-driven exercise. Engineers are left to decide how best to use patterns in different applications.

Structure of Design Patterns

What is clear is that there needs to be structure into which patterns can be formulated; this allows for them to be largely self-documenting. Indeed, one of the principles of using design patterns is that they should be structured, allowing each one to be created from a template.

This list is adapted from that provided by the Design Patterns authors, and can be used as rigidly or as loosely as is required. Some aspects will prove not to add any useful value to the template, but are provided here in the interest of completeness.

We have also refrained from using the term ‘classes and objects’, as is common in discussions of design patterns, preferring to only use the term ‘classes’. The reason for this is one of object oriented design preference – if a pattern needs to be defined in terms of objects, then a certain implementation decision has been made and forced upon future adopters of the specific pattern.

Application of Design Patterns in Software Engineering

In addition, by abstracting solutions to common software engineering problems, design patterns can be used again and again. Since they use a proven solution each time, reuse at the design level is very high. This improves the quality of resulting implementations beyond that which would be achievable using only object oriented techniques.

The application of design patterns in the real world must necessarily be carried out with reference to other principles already deployed. In other words, while they offer solutions to common software engineering problems, there is no added value in creating patterns for every part of a system under development.

Instead, they should be used in cases where the resulting implementation (or design) is likely to have a use in future projects. In essence, the best way to use design patterns in software engineering is in providing standard behaviours between highly specialised classes in a software system. The are not a design technique per se, in the way that other paradigms are.

When working with design patterns, it is therefore important to remember that they should be precise enough that there are no possible misinterpretations. Using a suitable high level definition language that can be shown to be correct will help to ensure this.

Are you bored with the look of your living area? Are they in tatters? Does your shower cubicle lack sparkle? Grubby grout lines in your kitchen? In these credit crunchy times you can still decorate with ease when you with wall tile panels, which offer a quick and easy solution to your tiling maladies.

Wall tile panels offer a hard, glazed surface with fully glazed edges providing a neat finish to walls and window sills; they can even be bent around outside corners. The high gloss finish of some tiles come in a range of colours and patterns like plain, marble, metallic and stone effects which complement all of the current living, bathroom and kitchen trends. They are easy to clean. You just need to simply wipe them with a damp cloth or you can use warm water with soap or detergent, then rinse and wipe dry. No scouring powders or any other abrasives should ever be used on wall tiles and they leave harsh chemicals making them erode soon.

Plastic wall tiles are in trend these days. These stylish tiles are usually made of polystyrene or vinyl plastic, sold under many brand names. Polystyrene plastic (such as Bakelite polystyrene, Catalin Luxtred, Plexon M, Styron) is not damaged by water, oil, alcohol, vinegar, or the usual household acids. Cleaning fluids, gasoline, nail polish and polish remover, and oil from lemon / orange peel will damage them. Vinyl plastic (such as Vinylite, Saran, Geon, Marvinol, Ultron, and Monsanto vinyl butryol) is tough. Ordinary household chemicals will not harm them and they resist damage from acid, alcohol, food, ink, and dirt; but be careful not to spatter them with moth preparations. Too much heat will soften most plastic so be careful in placing near a heater or oven.

The advantage of plastic wall tiles is that besides giving insulation it reduces both condensation and germs growth. Plastic wall tiles were also used to cover over unsightly plastered or damaged walls. The tile panels are fixed into place with adhesive and they can then be grouted with a flexible grout and sealer. The job requires no special equipment. You just need a ruler and scissors or craft knife. So you can actually do it yourself, but it’s better to consult a professional.

It is because of the plastic wall tiles being light weight and flexible they are ideal for boats and caravans where there are chances of more movement on the whole structure and the walls, and they mould over slightly uneven wall surfaces in the home too. Small sink splash backs in cloakrooms, baby changing areas, utility rooms and en suites can all be tiled with the panels. Once on the wall they are durable and rigid just like ceramics.

If you desire for a ceiling that lasts for a long time, you can use plastic ceiling wall tiles. Plastic ceiling tiles are great for added insulation. You may find that your energy consumption decreases considerably when you install them. Plastic is commonly used for insulating windows and doors. So, it can do wonders on ceilings as well.

Modern design tries to merge pure function with something pleasing and pleasant, something beautiful. Ultimately, modern design fuses those concepts by stripping away embellishment so that the function is its own beauty. One definition calls minimalism the extreme simplification of form. Another common word is reduce, to bring something to its barest essence.

A seminal work in functional planning, A Pattern Language, emphasizes understanding completely how a building or space will be used in order to create natural movement that direction. Retractable awnings are an area where function really defines both style and efficiency in a natural pattern:

· Alternating light and shadow

· Warm color and filtered lights

· Juxtaposing soft and hard materials

Aesthetic efficiency is pervasive in all aspects of building design: architecture, interior design, and landscaping. And in all three areas, retractable awnings have a role.

Planning at the Beginning

Modern building designs have several key features:

Retractable awnings are valuable tools for contractors and architects because they inherently capture minimalist style. Retractable awning frames are unpretentious and smooth lined. Retractable awnings have no stanchions, so there is no obstruction to any view. Space remains open, which is fundamental to wide windows or solid glass displays in residential and commercial spaces. A good web designing is the composite mixtures of the mind blowing graphics, fonts, and colors, layouts, flash and sound. The web site or the web design is created in such a way that it could communicates with the visitors and construct a good first-hand impression.

There are a number of important fundamentals of a good & satisfactory website designs that a designer or the one who is looking to have a website should know.

Color:

The color used in the web site has a great impact on the overall design and looks. The colors management in a web design significantly changes and influences the frame of mind of visitor. While selecting a color a designer should be aware of the color compatibility of the different colors used in the website with respect to different operating systems, browsers and screens resolutions. While creating a website the web designer should utilize colors cautiously and judiciously. Colors converse in their particular speech and inducing passion straight away. Colors enroll a deep impact and if your site comprises of the impressive and inspiring color scheme then your intention behind having a website is definitely fulfilled.

Apart from good designs your website should have placed the main links, content in a proper way. Like the text present there on the website should have divided into small paragraphs, it will increase the readability and makes your site of much worth.

Graphics :

The graphics or the images used in a website are very important as they increase the looks of the design in a positive sense and if you perfectly placed the graphics in a good manner then your website will be excellent. The sizes, colors of the graphics should be well-matched to the nature and type of the corporation for whom you are making site for. While using graphics in the site a good designer should pay attention to the following points.

1. The graphics used should be of small size and its better to have small images.

2. Huge images may lead to slow down web pages

3. The graphics should be robust with the content.

Font :

Fonts used in a web design at different places are also imperative in order to generate professional designs.

1. Change the font sizes wherever necessary, to differentiate the topics, headings etc.

2. It’s good to use standard font families like “Rockwood LT Standard”, think your font style in relation with the browser. How your fonts displays with other browsers.

3. You can use one or 2 font families to make the design look more professional.

Layout :

There are different layouts that a designer can use in a website like 2 column layout, 3 column layout etc. A good layout greatly impact overall looks of a web design. Here are some of the tips regarding the layout

Command pattern is a separation of following paticipants to carry out some task:

Client – Who wants the task done (our program, like main(…) method)
Invoker - Who initiates a task
Receiver – Who listenes to the command and carries out the task.
Command - interface for execution between invoker and receiver.
ConcreteCommand – implementation of Command. Holds the parameters required to carry out the operation.

Here Main(…) is the client

Client asks User (Invoker) to carry out some task (Calculations by Compute(…) method)

User knows about Calculator (Receiver) who will do the calculation and command which is an interface to call the required calculation operation (Execute or Unexecute).
But what calculation is to be done is known to Client. Client asks (or issues commands) User to do some +, – , *, / operations.

User records these commands in an array and calls command.Execute or UnExecute. the implementation(CalculatorCommand) knows well how to do the opertaion.

* Now here comes the use of command. If there is need to undo upto some level, user has a record of what commands were issued. It will just call the receiver (CalculatorCommand) to carry out same commands in reverse.

Uses for the Command pattern

Command objects are useful for implementing:

Multi-level undo: If all user actions in a program are implemented as command objects, the program can keep a stack of the most recently executed commands. When the user wants to undo a command, the program simply pops the most recent command object and executes its undo() method.

Transactional behavior Undo is perhaps even more essential when it’s called rollback and happens automatically when an operation fails partway through. Installers need this and so do databases. Command objects can also be used to implement two-phase commit.

Progress bars Suppose a program has a sequence of commands that it executes in order. If each command object has a getEstimatedDuration() method, the program can easily estimate the total duration. It can show a progress bar that meaningfully reflects how close the program is to completing all the tasks.

Wizards Often a wizard presents several pages of configuration for a single action that happens only when the user clicks the “Finish” button on the last page. In these cases, a natural way to separate user interface code from application code is to implement the wizard using a command object. The command object is created when the wizard is first displayed. Each wizard page stores its GUI changes in the command object, so the object is populated as the user progresses. “Finish” simply triggers a call to execute(). This way, the command class contains no user interface code.

GUI buttons and menu items In Swing and Borland Delphi programming, an Action is a command object. In addition to the ability to perform the desired command, an Action may have an associated icon, keyboard shortcut, tooltip text, and so on. A toolbar button or menu item component may be completely initialized using only the Action object.

Thread pools A typical, general-purpose thread pool class might have a public addTask() method that adds a work item to an internal queue of tasks waiting to be done. It maintains a pool of threads that execute commands from the queue. The items in the queue are command objects. Typically these objects implement a common interface such as java.lang.Runnable that allows the thread pool to execute the command even though the thread pool class itself was written without any knowledge of the specific tasks for which it would be used.

Macro recording If all user actions are represented by command objects, a program can record a sequence of actions simply by keeping a list of the command objects as they are executed. It can then “play back” the same actions by executing the same command objects again in sequence. If the program embeds a scripting engine, each command object can implement a toScript() method, and user actions can then be easily recorded as scripts.

Networking It is possible to send whole command objects across the network to be executed on the other machines, for example player actions in computer games.

Parallel Processing Where the commands are written as tasks to a shared resource and executed by many threads in parallel (possibly on remote machines -this variant is often referred to as the Master/Worker pattern)

Mobile Code Using languages such as Java where code can be streamed/slurped from one location to another via URLClassloaders and Codebases the commands can enable new behavior to be delivered to remote locations (EJB Command, Master Worker)

Design Patterns:

Or they can be Formal Design Patterns documented with sections such as “Context”, “Problem”, “Solution”, and a UML diagram.

The Formal Patterns usually have the specific aims that solve the specific issues, whereas the informal patterns tend to provide the guidance that is more general in nature.
